1949 flathead engine rattle
Hi Looking for help. 1949 Mercury station wagon flathead engine rattle . Noise is rev related in all gears when holding a constant speed , not there accelerating or on the overrun ! A throaty, roary, rattle . Old worn engine . Any help appreciated .

I'd check for an exhaust leak. They can be more obnoxious and rattly sounding than an internal knock would be. Rods and mains are more metallic and deep inside sounding. Valve train noises are closer described as a tick, typically. A cracked exhaust manifold, blown gasket or a leaky pipe is more external and raspy. You might try looking under the hood at night, in the dark, with the engine running. It's easier to see the flames that way.
