My 2011 5.0 engine just started knocking/tapping. I was hoping someone here can help me diagnose the sound from the youtube videos I made. Any help is appreciated.
Hard to tell from that 2nd video but the 1st video sounds like a collapsed lifter. There were issues with the early 5.0 engines in that the cylinders were not milled perfectly round creating a knocking but that tap I hear doesn't sound heavy enough to be that, I'd need to put a mechanics stethoscope on the engine to pinpoint the tap and go from there.
lifter or broken valve spring leaving a valve hanging slightly open. put a piece of hose to your ear and other end on valve cover move it along cover till its loud there is your problem. never heard exhaust leak sound like that
Thanks for replies, much appreciated. It doesnt seem to knock/tap at idle. Its loudest when I hold the brake and apply some throttle and "load" the engine. Not sure if that's helpful info. I'll get a stethoscope and see if I can isolate it. Is a lifter and/or valve a repair process? Or would I have to buy a new head?
I spent 30 mins under the truck with a stethoscope last night. It certainly sounds like its coming from the bottom of the engine, towards the back. In fact, I cant tell if its coming from the transmission bell housing area or the engine. With the stethoscope its a very distinct metallic "ting ting ting" sound. Im 90% sure its not related to the valves/cams/lifters. I really dont think its an exhaust leak either. Any ideas?
Unfortunately I think we have diagnosed it to be the dreaded cylinder distortion that plagued the 2011's. When I unplug the coil on cylinder #4 the noise stops. bummer
Only fix for that is a new block. I would see if you can locate a good used low mileage engine to replace it with. LKQ.COM will be your best bet for that. They also give a warranty with most everything they sell. I bought a Taurus SHO v8 engine from them once upon a time. They also deliver.

Thats what I thought. But if this was a problem in many 2011-2014 engines, isn't there a high chance that a used engine will have the same issue?
