Side mirror mounts

Hey All,
Started looking for new side mirrors and discovered that my doors dont have a slot in them. I have a couple old side mirrors just mounted to the outside of the door. Scratching my head on this one. Any Thoughts?

Could be that the slots were filled in or covered at some point? That's what I discovered on my '58. Went with some aftermarket side mirrors that look correct on my truck.

I believe the slots could be cut alright with a 1/4" drill and a file or two.
