1999 450 tower needs more torque. Bone stock now but does have 167000. Runs well just not enough bottom. Any ideas about how to 'cost efficiently' increasing torque.
If you have already done the exhaust and the intake, it sounds like your going to have to go with the cam. There are several on the market that will give you the lower rpm troque, its more a matter of what your really looking for.
Check out the Towing forum, I think there is a thread in there with a very similar question that was answered. Good luck.
Will check out towing. Truck is bone stock. Would prefer to stay out of engine and keep on the road. I've got so many projects I just can't get into rebuilding an engine I don't know much about. Getting more feedback and Banks and Paxton offer some bolt on items but ?cost. Thanks
4.88 non-positraction so I'm not sure regearing the rear will help even if you could. It's a ZF tranny so regearing it is expensive and not very practical with the wide range gears in this one. I'm not sure you can regear those rears except for some reason the diesels you can unless it's positraction. Don't know why. There's a big lag between 2nd and 3rd in the wide ratio 5sp tranny which this one has. I suspect an underdrive unit may help but it's $3000 less install. Probably the way to go if I want the unit o/w likely will be selling it. Any thoughts?
Your best bet is probably a Banks kit (intake, exhaust, and chip). It will liven it up. Another option is just to chip it (look in the chip forum on this site).
Also, this motor likes to rev. Torque and pull is best at 3300 RPM.
Your '99 has lower HP than the 2000 and up models.
Good advice thanks. I meant an overdrive unit and not underdrive altho the underdrive would certainly give more torque, too.
The problem I'm having is I cannot find a 4x4 used tranny for the vehicle. A reman is ok but they require a core charge that's not retrievable since I'm using a 4x2 to core exchange for a 4x4 tranny. I need the 4x4 to mate up with the overdrive unit.
Anybody out there with a 4x4 that's useful they want to sell? Either to swap out or just to use as a core.
The overdrive unit is roughly $2400 not counting installation. The driveshaft has to be shortened about 12 inches then balanced.
I think I'll try the regearing this way then upgrade the chip if necessary.
The Banks upgrade you're speaking of is about $1400 if my memory is correct.
Thanks again for all the info people. Have a safe and great Holiday season.
No I just got the truck and it's just not got quite enough pulling power up hills pulling two vehicles.
Gearing is the right way to go for now but I may want to add the chip first since I'll probably do it anyway and it's the cheapest bang for the buck. There's also another way to get more power by changing the resistence on the crank sensor and advancing the timing some. Someone is going to help me do this. Thanks for asking tho. I keep thinking about it and come up with more and more options and pathways. Best and have a safe and wonderful Holiday season for all. Michael
