2016 Lariat. In both 2H and 4A I think I'm hearing what sounds like something is rubbing somewhere in the front end. It's been going on for the last 8 months or so. It shifts into 4A and back to 2H as it always has. What do we think is going on here?
My guess, if it does it in 2h and 4a, likely not the iwe. Often the sound goes away in 4a if iwe, because the hubs are engaged. I would be suspecting wheel bearings or a brake dragging of some kind. Does it go away with slight brake pressure? Bearings: If you go to a large parking lot, drive slow, hear sound, turn hard right, hard left. Does it go away?
Wheel bearing hubs realistically have a bout an 80-100k miles life on these trucks. The IWE vacuum hubs are a constant problem on these trucks too, as SpemcerPJ and seventyseven250 mentioned. I've rep;aced hubs and eliminated IWEs on two trucks in the last few months. I would not recommend that anyone stay with the IWE system once it breaks. The minimal MPG gain you get from it is not worth the constant vacuum leaks and intermittent hub grinding. You'll know right away if it's a vacuum or IWE issue if the noise goes away in 4A or 4 high.
If the bakes are original, it could be time for those as well. They last about 70k miles or so, depending on how you use your truck and driving style. You could also have a damaged axle shaft on one side or the other, but that would be unlikely. It's hard to say without being there and hearing it.

No change in sound when I do that so not an IWE I guess.

I had the brakes redone last fall at about 90K. Seems like I'll just wait for something to break.
You can check the front inner fenders and see if one of them got deformed and is rubbing a tire. Also check the sound deadening panel underneath. Could be it's damaged from oil changes and is broken on one corner or the other and is rubbing something when you drive.
OP, I see you have a Lariat, and therefore, you also have the TOD transfer case. Your front driveshaft will turn no natter if in 2H, 4H, and, 4A.
I suggest leaving it in 2H, and see if your noise increases with speed. If so, it's possible you have a front pinion bearing going out. There was a rash of bad ones about the age of your truck, due to improper install at the factory.
No guarantee, just a suggestion.
