Is there some trick to removng the internal c-clip u-joints in the front axle? I pulled all four clips, soaked the joint in penetrating oil overnight, and then tossed it on a 40 ton press. After bowing the table trying to push on each of the caps I soaked it down again and am letting it sit again. So,any tricks?
All of my C-clips came of with a screwdriver and a hammer. I put mine on a vise and beat on it with a big hammer and an impact socket. A lot of times, it just takes an impact jolt to pop it free.
I normally clamp the inter shaft in a vise, then hit the yoke on the outer.. that normally works on the first time. Those were the ones never changed on my '85 f-150.
Yeah, these are out of an '80 and they've never been changed out either. I'm not going to be able to get back to the axle until monday, but i tried the BFH method and it wouldn't budge. Thinking about gtting out the air hammer and gong after it with taht.
do you have access to a torch method one heat the caps then beat to death method two cut the the joint trunion the beat to death individuallyheat allways works
A few years ago while doing the joints in my front axle I had to hit one so hard, when the cap popped loose, it did about 4 ricochets, and imbeded itself in the windshield... so always wear safety glasses...
I've used the air hammer with mixed results. I feel it works about as good as the BFH mode. Try it. My guess is you will have to find someone with an actelyne torch though.
Use the blue wrench.... Cut the cross out, and pound the caps out. I had the same problem on my 81 F100, axle is out of an 82, and probably never had the U-joints changed... I still ended up bending one stub axle getting the U-joint out
I have a torch and a rosebud so that's no problem, i just wanted to leave heat as my last option. I tried the air hammer and nothing happened, so alas, I gotta try heat.
I've had a few nasty ones. Use the heat, if that don't work cut the cross out and press out the caps. I had one I did this to and still ended up bending the dang thing.
