New headers glowing red - is this normal?

Just installed a Gibson performance exhaust Kit on my Class C motorhome (460 CID w/Carter AFB 4 BBL carb). Gibson Kit included a set of Thorley Tri Y headers. After starting engine - I noticed that in a darkened engine compartment the headers were glowing a dull red with engine running around 1500 rpm in park (no load).

Is this normal ? Emission systems on engine are EGR, Smog/Air pump, PCV and vapor recovery.

I haven't had any previous experience w/headers on this engine - so I don't know if a slight red glow in a darkened engine compartment is normal or not. I did not see a similar glow from my Ford OEM cast iron exhaust manifolds under similar conditions.

headers tend to get red hot quite often but ive never herd of it happining at 1500rpms???? next time it dose it check into you instruments and see what your engin temp reads.

Engine temp is fine - Based on what I've been reading - I'm beginning to think I might be running my idle mixture too lean. As part of "improvements" to the 460 CID engine - I also replaced the original Holley 4180 4 BBL carb with a Carter AFB 4 BBL performance carb. Another thing I will check is my ignition timing. I understand if it is not advanced enough that this could also cause the hot exhaust ??

Hey bigwalt1,You are too lean or your too retarded(your ignition that is).I would start by checking your ignition first since it's easier, then the carb.Your headers shouldn't be glowing at 1500rpm,I could see it if your were pulling some rpm's or putting a good workout on your motor.

Try to run as much initial timing as you can without it detonating or draging on the starter. My friend's motor did the same thing your's did but his header's were orange,we ended up having to jump a tooth on the distributor gear.He installed the distributor wrong and we couldn't get enough advance out of it without skipping a tooth.
