I have a new drag link. The end that connects to the steering arm has 2 steel cups to hold the ball.
The other end of it that connects to the big u thing, which I don't know what it is called, came with three cups. Is the third a spare or in case you need to take up extra slack? The assembly diagram only shows 2.
I just put a new one on my truck- I think old one was still ok but at 75% off when Mid Fifty closed I bought it. One thing I noticed when I tightened it, it took a lot more than just a regular screwdriver in slot to tighten. I have a huge "screwdriver" that is used more as a pry bar which I used. It had a square shaft so I used a crescent wrench to turn it far enough to get cotter pin in. Seems to be fine.
They make drag link sockets just for this job. Kind of a handy tool to have.
YES!
A very handy tool to have. I found one on eBAY and some years back, ordered it and received it and felt good about having it. And verified that it worked or fit on the slots on an old drag link ends that was sitting around in the pile of parts that the OP gave me. So I thought I was all set. Turns out the newer parts kits I ordered from Mid-Fifty at the time, and finally got around to using after they closed, the slots in their kits were much narrower than the stock ones. So the tool that would fit the stock ones wouldn't fit the slots in the newer ones. So like Greg mentions, I ended up just using a large screwdriver to tighten and bottom the ends down then backed them off to the first cotter pin lock holes. It worked fine that way.
