Just heard from my mechanic and total for the 'flywheel' is $1600.00. The new starter was $800.00 so a total of $2,404.00. Not getting rid of the truck, but my wife sure wants me to.
You have a flex plate not a flywheel if it's automatic. The starter is an easy driveway job, flex plate takes a bit more time and a transmission jack. If you have some basic wrenches, sockets and extensions you could buy the large transmission jack from harbor freight and replace both for around $800-1000 including the trans jack.
I don't believe the body has to be raised on an '07 but I could be mistaken. All things considered that's not a terrible price for the flexplate replacement, BUT that's a ridiculous amount for the starter. I don't know how much the actual starter costs (guessing $300-350) but I can swap a starter out in less than an hour.
Picked up the truck today. Mechanic showed me the old part. Teeth chewed up pretty good in 4 places around the flexplate. Explained a lot. Anyway, they have been installing 6.4 starters on the 6.0 motors for years and the startup sound is 100% different. Doesn't take near as long to kick off. Thank y'all for all the help. Now, get an oil change and add Archoil and we will be good to go for a while.
UPDATE- I have been out of town in another vehicle and I have some transmission fluid dripping on my carport floor. Is there a place I need to tell them to start looking first?
Considering you just had it in for service for the Flex plate which means they had to pull the trans, shouldn't you be taking it back to that shop to figure it out? I would assume it's under some sort of warranty, but it's probably just a loose line.
Oh, it is. I was just wondering if somebody knew where to tell them to look. The same guy that did the work is going to be looking at it in the morning.
