The truck I'm fixing didn't come with a tailgate like most of you lucky tailgate owners. I ordered a new aftermarket tailgate online for $300 off Amazon. Seemed cheap with free shipping, but oh man was it cheap. It fit and closed after a little cursing. The only problem is it sits an inch lower when closed from the top of the bed. Dennis Carpenter here I come.....
The bed was rough for sure. It's a poor product and Amazon is refunding the $ without me having to return it thankfully. I believe they know this product is not right and I would imagine I'm not the only one letting them know. I wanted the free shipping, but more so I need a tailgate that fits! I have time so I will source one from a reputable company.
It fits and closes fine, it's just short and if the tailgate was raised, all the lines would be off. I think if I had bed liner coating on the tailgate it would line up flush with the bed when opened. Some lost time and labor, but at least they are sending my $ back without returning it. What use is this tailgate to anyone if it won't fit correctly? Scrap?

Tail gate for a home made utility trailer, back rest for a porch bench or swing, short bridge over that gap in the living room floor, wall hanging in shop .... just to name a few.
It fits well enough for that guy whose tailgate is totally trashed after dropping that 460 on his to haul home to go in his '76 short bed 4x4 with 6" lift and 35s because no one will notice it way up there, or he could add the sectioned top from another, rusty tailgate to the top.

I thought I was doing well to get it mounted and closing good. At least I have practice for the real tailgate when it shows up. I can't sell this because I know it doesn't fit. If someone in Georgia needs a tailgate that is a little short, I have a free one for them.
Hey Kman
Have you checked with Rich (the parts guy) on here.
If he does not have one, Where in Ga, are you, N,S, E, or West.
Reason is there is a JY over here in ALA... that would prolly have one. He will not ship..
If interested, PM me and I will check as I am going later this week anyway,
What year, is ur truck?

My truck is a 1975 f100 2wd LB. I am just outside 285 on the north side of Atlanta. I think I am going to order one up from Dennis Carpenter. Most of the tailgates I've seen used were really rough and rusting from the inside out. They are definitely hard to come by in good used shape, but I will wait to order one and see if there is a decent used one available.

I second the use for a bench or porch swing back rest!!
I went to the Run to the Sun event a couple of weekends ago and they were selling TG benches there. I thought they looked pretty cool but I think they may have been a few hundred dollars. I can't see paying that for one but would surely build one if I happened to come into an extra TG for free!!

You did that ....
The top few inches of my Ford tailgate is covered with a polished stainless steel guard. A 1-1/2" wide top section of another tail gate would attach, Id adjust & weld in places, and it would add strength to resist folding .... then cover it with a ss tail gate guard which adds more strength too.

I like the new reproduction tailgate with the raised Ford letters. I'm definitely looking to get a little help where I can and I have never welded. I want to learn, but my time is pretty booked lately. I'm looking forward to putting in some time on the truck real soon.
Check the closest vo-tech school, I got a lot of good and some tips to improve my skills, plus built things, like my rear bumper. Just cost me a fee for rods and any steel I didn't provide. I knew some basics, but it helped a bunch.
