So the wife and I are considering taking our 5th wheel from Kansas City to Galveston for a week with the kids prior to our cruise out of Galveston.
I’ve towed the 5th wheel from Kansas City to Minneapolis on multiple occasions, my dad lives up there and I’ve got friends in KC with trucks and trailers so we were in the “safe zone” if something happened on that route we were covered at both ends… nothing major ever happened but still.
going to Galveston, my friends in KC with trucks are also going on the cruise so they’re driving or flying down there and won’t be able to rescue us if something goes wrong.
if you were planning this trip, or have done some similar what are some things you had or wished you had beyond the norm (jack, breaker bar, basic tool set, CPS)??? I’ve done just about every possible preventative maintenance thing to this truck that can be done from the front bumper to the rear.
This is the truck with the new engine that has about 1,000 miles on it and BTS transmission with probably 30k on it. I serviced the trans last fall as well.
Spare tyre for truck and trailer. Maybe grease up the trailer bearings or whatever normal maintenance needed. Inspection of all lamps and such. Check battery ages.
@oldbird1965 he drags his all over, hopefully he can give you some tips also.
I am in DFW mostly and Hou often, so can help if stranded as needed. Another guy just south of me in DFW knows his way around these too.
Vac pump with pulley, ipr, cps, icp, since you have E fuel spare pump and filters, hpop lines, these are the common things that will leave you stranded and are hard to come by at local parts stores.
Spare tires, jack, and breaker plbar with sockets for truck andbtrailer like Sicario X posted,
Hi, good luck on your trip! Some summers go smooth, some not. Last year I lost a injector due to the armature coming loose and ran it on seven injectors for 500 miles before I could fit it. I carry lots of tools including a welder and air compressor. All the stuff mentioned above too. Last year I also broke a leaf spring on the 5er and ordered two, have one now as a spare. I chained the axle back to keep the tires from rubbing together until I got to a place to fix it. Jack stands came in use for that alone with four different size bottle jacks. You just never know what you'll need but its nice to be prepared as much as possible. I'm like you, I do all sorts of work on the truck and 5er before leaving on our annual trip of 6 to 7K miles.
I don't haul a trailer of note but I do a lot of roadtrips in my truck. I still carry a breaker bar but I love my cordless 1/2" impact gun for tire changes. I recently upgraded to a Badlands offroad jack to ditch the old bottle jack. The other thing I always carry is a tire plug kit and an air compressor that clips directly onto the battery (no cheap cigarette lighter plugs). Generally my tire issues have been from the times I have had a trailer, but I still carry the gear.
Other than that, fire extinguisher, food and water, and a good first aid kit.
Thanks fellas, I do need to look into a 12v compressor and get a fire extinguisher for the truck. 5th wheel has one inside but truck should have one too
Dry Chen are the most common, especially for a small one. If you can find a CO2 or a clean agent get one of those. Much easier cleanup afterwards. Might consider a pressurized water can as those can be refilled and used on lots of things.
Also forgot to post, make sure your truck and trailer spare tires are in good shape and have a recent manufactured date,
oh yea, I learned the hard way not to mess around with tires. Getting new tires on the 5th wheel right now. Truck got new tires all the way around last summer.
