Another oil question for ya!

O.K., What is the best oil? I am sure it has been hashed out before, but I am looking at 3 types which are stocked at the local Wally World.
1) Rotella @ $6.74 gallon
2) Delvac @ $6.69 Gallon
3) Wal-Mart Tech? 15W40 @ $1.17 quart
I am not sure of the Wally Worl name, it is Tech something. It has all the same ratings as Rotella. Does anybody have the specs for the Wally World stuff?

Wally World SuperTech here.

Also found Tractor Supply house brand. $0.97/qt.

As 10 people about oil. You will get 12 answers.

Buy what makes sense to you, not what someone tells you to do.

Ford says 15w-40 CH-4 oil in PSDs.

SuperTech & Tractor Supply are both 15w-40 CH-4.

One thing I don't understand about a lot of PSD owners when asking about oil.

We drive a high priced, high torque, decent horsepowered truck that we all enjoy and realize is a pricey vehicle and a litle bit more maintenance then the typical truck.

We then spend tons of cash on performance upgrades, accessories, wheels, lift kits, etc. ..... then we have threads about what is the least expensive oil we can run in these PSD's ???????

Just spend a few extra pennies on a brand name quality oil that meets or exceeds Ford specs. and sleep better at night.

Because brand name quality is a figment of your imagination. You pay more for nothing.

Also, even if you pay for "brand name quality", what brand?

There are those who refuse to use Delo because it is crap.

Other refuse to use Rotella.

Still other claim that QS is no good.

Even more say they will never use Valvoline again.

Some same Amsoil is the only way to go, while others say it is just a marketing scam.

It will take you several hours to read all the threads on syn. versus dino. Which is better?

If syn. is better, is SuperTech syn. (yes, they make one) better than Rotella dino?

So what it "brand name quality" and who really has it?

The only comprehensive test on motor oil that I have ever seen in the last 20 years concluded that there is no difference between oil when oil and filter changes are made per manufacturers' recommendations.

That's what I go by. Not what Madison Avenue tells me.

I could care less what some NASCAR racer has printed on the side of his car.

jschira,

You're right, I would stick with Tractor Supply as my main provider of premium oil and supplies for my PSD. lololol

How close is Arlington to Arkansas?

I posted a thread on this awhile back, and the consensus seemed to be Ford Motorcraft oil. That's what came in the truck when it was new, and I certainly haven't heard anyone complain about it. The only bummer is you have to go to the dealer to get it. But, I called a couple of them and they gave me some competitive prices once they new I was shopping them. The Motorcraft filters were less than $10 at AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts!

Maybe if we all complain enough to AutoZone or Adanvce Auto, maybe they'll try harder to carry the Motorcraft oil too!

Oh, those parts stores had Rotella there, but I have 4 Ford's in the family (and always had Fords) and alway try to use Motorcraft stuff.

Diesel,

I won't skimp on anything for my PSD. It's my baby. lololol

Because I am under warranty and change my own oil, the last thing I want is to give Ford an out because I haven't used their oil, wrong weight, kind, etc.

I have had too many experiences in the past with car dealers, etc.

My best friend is one and I know what goes on behind closed doors of car dealerships, new and used.

Diesel Daddy,
My local Wally-World has Motorcraft 15w40, but only in the 1 quart containers. Would like to go the gallon jug route vs dumping 15 seprate quarts into truck.

Motorcraft oil is made by Conoco and availble at Wally World for $1.33/qt.

Motorcraft filters are made by Purolator.

All oil that is API certified has to meet the same API specs. If the oil is API CH-4 rated, it meets the same specs as every other oil. Do some oils exceed those API specs? Probably yes. But so what? Change your oil as recommended by Ford (and as required to maintain your warranty) and you will never wear out the protection of an API oil between changes.

Ford says use API CH-4 15w-40. If you do, there are no warranty issues.

All filters must past the same test. 100% filtration at 40 microns. Many pass 90%+ at 20 or even 10 microns. Some pass 100% at 10 microns. Are these better? Technically yes, but engine manufacturers have studied the situation and concluded that particles less than 40 microns are not a wear issue. You can agree or disagree. That's your choice.

If you want to sleep with your truck and feed it caviar, OK by me. It's your truck. But this is an emotional decision, not a rational or technical decision.

You need to separate fact from fiction. Reality from make-believe.

Everybody it seems has their own "brand" preference. You're right, they all could be the same. But, if you've had good (or trouble free) experiences with a brand, why would you change?

Like I've said, I've pretty much always have used Ford Motorcraft stuff, I'll probably always use it. Unless, I'm in a pinch!!

You know, same with my boat. I know I could get away with a few $$ less by buying Fram oil filters or the like and some other brand of oil, but why not use the Mercruiser stuff? Always have, and haven't had any trouble, so why switch?

No reason to, except, you know that Ford doesn't make most Motorcraft parts. Purolator makes the MC FL-1995 and Conoco makes MC 15w-40 oil.

If you can buy a Purolator filter or Conoco oil cheaper than MC, why would you want to throw money away?

So if Fram, or Wix or whoever makes a filter or an oil that is just as good, and costs less (sometimes a lot less), seems sort of stubborn not to at least consider the alternatives.

Remember, brand names are just that, a brand. Maybe they were as good as they were 20 years ago. Maybe they are not.

For example, how many brands of auto batteries do you see in stores? 10? 20? They are all made by 4 companies.

Same with appliances. Electrolux, Amana, Whirlpool and GE make all the appliances in the US. Most of the low-end appliances are made in Asia by Asian manufacturers and impoted by one of these companies and sold under one of their "brand" names.

Aspirin. All of it in the made in the US by 2 chemical companies. Paying extra for "Genuine Bayer"? Forgetaboutit.
