Which turbo

I need some opinions and guidance on which turbo I should drop in my 18’ 6.7. Currently has a big non vgt 70 mm spe emperor, I’m currently not impressed with the speed it spools while towing and daily driving, I am looking to go back to vgt, I’m thinking between kc whistler stage 3 and spe strike force stage 2, how much lag do these turbos have, will they be better than what I have now?

70mm is huge, why not a 63mm?

I would like to go back to vgt for occasional towing and better drivability, I believe the stage 2 spe strike is 67mm

Will likely still be pretty laggy, are you running larger injectors?

running stock sticks, with a 55% over cp4
i thought that with the spe strike being vgt it would be significantly better than a non vgt

Looks like the spe turbo has a pretty large turbine wheel as well as compressor wheel. Even though it’s a vgt there’s a good chance it’s laggy and will have high egts towing. Unfortunately it looks like spe only offers s300 t4 turbos with the larger 80/73 turbine wheel. If they offered the s363 with the 76/68 turbine wheel it would be the best non vgt t4 turbo setup for the 6.7 imo. I’d look into a KC whistler stage 2, best mix of spool and flow to support more power.

If you have the money I’d highly recommend as small of a turbo as you can for the valley, like a stage 1 VGT or even the factory turbo and a compound. I’m running a 76mm over the stock vgt on a 22 and it tows great like a stock truck but runs like hell when the 76 spools up.

methonal injection is what I would do. less expensive than swapping out turbos again and more air is not going to help ...existing piping for air is all exposed to heat ....you are not getting bang for the buck

Would the water/meth provide enough power (for lack of better term) to spool up the turbo and keep it there for towing? I'm moderately familiar with the systems, and see you have one, but it seems to me that a turbo properly sized for it's purpose with water/meth would run much more efficiently.

No, it will not help it spool faster.

I learned diesel mechanicing from an old man, 70s when I worked with him and his general rule for towing was never to exceed the liter displacement of the engine in mm to turbo turbine. aka 6.7L diesel, don't go larger than 67mm for best towing capability. VGT obviously changes this dynamic but IMHO the basic principle stands.

OP did you settle on a new turbo? I'm in the same boat as you, and have have been searching for quite a while for someone that has experience with the options you mentioned (KC, SPE). It's tough to find any information that goes beyond the "make your truck sound like a 6.0" mentality. I see that Titan Turbo has many options to choose from as well, does anyone have experience with them?

I'm at 355k with the factory SST, so I think I've crossed the threshold into running on borrowed time. The turbo is showing signs of drawing oil past the bearings (burning a little, CAC tube/ compressor boots have oil seepage), and I'm starting to show reduced boost pressures as I drive. From what I've seen, the SPE Strike Stage II has a better shaft and a slightly larger tubine than the KC Warlock Stage II, at a slightly lower price.

I don't want to start a new thread that has essentially the same question, but would like some insight before I drop $3k on a turbo.
