Steering Column Rebuild

Hello all.

I read somewhere in this forum before where people had rebuilt their steering columns. Now of course I can’t find it when using the search feature.

Does anyone have a how to on rebuilding the steering column that includes what parts are needed?

I am trying to decide if I should or need to rebuild mine.

Thanks in advance.

I was looking for replacement parts for the steering column on Dennis Carpenter and I came across this updated lower bearing.

Has anyone used one of these?

Yes, much better than the plastic "bearing" that ford used. There are a number of these offered on ebay. I don't know the exact brand I used.

Do you have pictures of this installed? I’m curious to see how it’s placed especially with the three screws on the outside of the bearing and how it sits in the steel cup.

So does that bearing replace the steel cup?

I didn't have a steel cup. Both mine are dents, they have a piece of plastic that centers the steeing shaft in the end of the column. I welder the new bearing in the 75, and used the screws in the 78.

I might call DC and see how that bearing is supposed to fit a bumpside application.

I am using that lower bearing in my dent as well. I am not sure how much different the column is in yours. Pictures?

I have since learned battelborn brakes offers a sealed bearing for the top, that replaces the ballbearing and rubber bushing at the top. Next time I have my wheel off I will install that bearing since the rubber bushing up there is impossible to locate and the "bearing" isn't much of a bearing to begin with.

Once you get the wheel off and t/s switch removed the rest is very simple. Lower plastic bushing, upper bearing and a snap ring as I recall and the shaft slides right out. The column housing isn't much different than a piece of exhaust tube.

So there are three spot welds that hold the cup in. Drill them out, remove the cup and install the bearing.

It is a great upgrade for sure. I bought mine on Amazon.

This makes more sense now. I figured that the cup had to come out.

It looks like the dent columns got rid of the cup in the generation change which makes sense.

The upper bearing on the dents is like you said as well, not much of a bearing.

I was able to disassemble my steering column. You are right. There isn’t much to it.

I will post some better pictures of the column here today.

Below are screenshots of what DC has listed as replacement parts for the columns.

I think this is a replacement for the original style upper bearing? Looks like it would still require the plastic bushing maybe?
