Okay I took my truck to the dealer once for a general check over once I got it and had driven it for a little bit.
I told them to check the passenger side door lock, in cold weather it sticks badly. My key fob, and the unlock button in the truck doesn't push it up high enough. The ONLY way to get the passnger door open is for the driver to get in, reach over and pull the door lock up.
I originally thought it was a computer problem or something, but it seems like the lock is just sticking, but it only does it in the cold.
Any ideas on what I could do? I am not above using wd-40 or something, but my guess is, that isn't too good to be spraying it around the door lock.
Anyway, any ideas, or anyone else have the same problem?
thanx!
You may have to replace the lock actuator in that door. WD-40 in the latches will work sometimes but eventually you'll have to replace the actuator anyway. The WD-40 trick works well if your "door ajar" light & interior lights stay on though.
Its all easy to do once you've done it once. it took me awhile to figure it out. So if you don't want to spend a couple hours figuring it out let me know.
i'm having the same problem with my f-250. it started out with only the passanger lock sticking then it went to both of them. the other thing is they do it all the time, hot and cold. i have been hereing that i should replace the actuators so i guess thats what i will try. i'll let you know how it works.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 03-Jan-03 AT 10:27 PM (EST)]I had the EXACT same problem in my 92 F250. The lock button would move up slightly, but not enough to unlock the door. It took me forever goofing with the linkages, locks, etc with the door panels off to figure out the problem but here it is.
Ever go through that problem with the wife or the kids where you can't unlock the door while someone is trying to open it? (QUIT PUSHING THE DOOR BUTTON, PULLING THE HANDLE, ETC, WHILE I'M TRYING TO UNLOCK IT OR YOU'LL NEVER GET IN!!!) You know, that problem? Well there is a little mechanism that prevents you from being able to unlock the door when someone is trying to open the door. On mine, and I think on yours, that is sticking (the linkage that moves when you push the button or pull the lever to open the door). For some reason on my truck, the linkages inside the door right next to the door handle were sticking partially in the position that opens the door. Enough to activate that mechanism that prevents the door from unlocking but not so far as to prevent the door from closing and latching.
Take the door panel off, check and lubricate all of the linkages well, (check carefully, I didn't realize the linkages were stuck cuz they moved some, just not through the full motions) and it should start to work. On my truck, the problem reappears about once a year and all I have to do is spray lubricant in around the door opener button and it is good for another year or so.
I had this problem also and the fix for mine was a little more simple.
The actual door lock **** is about 12 inches long or so and it screws in to another part of the linkage between the interior plastic and sheet metal. Mine was screwed in a little too much (or not enough) and it was not lining up with the hole in the door trim where it come out... the rubbing against the side of the hole was causing it to hang up and not unkock the door all the way.
All I did was take off the interior trim and turn it a little so it would move up and down in the hole freely and not rub.
