Changing a VCT

On my 5.4 I was wondering if I can replace the VCT solenoid without pulling off the valve cover? Bank 1.

What year? 2004-2007 you can. 2008 and later you have to remove the valve cover.

IIRC - On my 2005 5.4L 3v the (Motorcraft) VCT units had a captured screw.
DEFINANTELY! don’t trust it while taking it out.
I also seem to remember the gaskets were a PITA to get out.

It’s a 2007. I removed the grommet and I can see the T27 screw but it seems like the hole in the valve cover is a little to small to get t27 down into. It’s not a straight shot. I’d have to bend around the solenoid. They could have made this so much easier by making the valve cover hole a little bit bigger. Has anyone else dealt with this?

You either have to use an extra long t27 "T" handle to get down in the hole.
You might be able to get it with a 1/4" extension + universal (wobble elbow) & your t27 bit.

In the video above, it shows him using a t27 (screwdriver style) to get down there & help turning with some vice grips.
