I changed the Differential Fluid on my truck after 80000 MLS. I know I should have done it earlier. The picture shows what it looked like when drained compared to what's new going in. It's pretty nasty stuff. The disappointing part is that it's the first change since I bought the truck new. There have never been any leaks, but when I drained the fluid, only 44 ounces(1.4qt) came out. The specs show there should be 2.75 quarts or 88 ounces. I pumped almost exactly 2.75 quarts back in the Diff. Doesn't seem as though there is much quality control going on at Ford. I've heard others have had this same issue so I would suggest topping up your fluids even if you bought a new vehicle.
I've been saying that for a while now. My 21 F450 only had 2qts in the rear differential. It needs 4qts. I drained and filled diffs, tcase, PS and engine oil with 12 miles on the odometer. I've been called a Ford hater and dealer hater by some for saying they never do it and won't get it right, just do it yourself.
all you people that say I'm a Ford or dealer hater, kiss my big toe...lol sorta kidding
Another job of fluid is COOLING. Oil can remove a lot of heat. Fluid can get cooked faster too.
Lubrication will be fine, even with that amount of fluid missing.
So instead of a 250K diff, it may only have a 100K life.
In otherwords it will not be fine. A 100k on a diff is a joke. I do that in 18 months. The diff should never fail. Running it low will cause failure over time. Even Dana says this. Opinions are not meant to be taken seriously. Facts are true. Don't believe me, call Dana. Posting just to up your post count doesn't help anyone

I saw a tradeshow video and the engineers from ZF (they created the 6R80, Ford licensed the design) said 60K is MAX what they suggest for a trans change. These are the German Engineers who designed it from scratch.
They demonstrated old fluid is very marginal, yeah it won't blow up right away but the transmission is losing life over it.
They have no control over the auto manufacturer in what they suggest to their customers.
