So had a axle U Joint explode on me yesterday. The stub axle looks okay, but i have the feeling getting the cap out will be a chore and not really wanting to tear down the spindle twice or have the truck down more than a day if it is damaged.
Rockauto has a US Standard Gear stub shaft for 150ish bucks and was wondering if anyone here has used one of them before.
so you got a different brand? and are you asking about the whole thing or just the half you didnt explode
I didn't end up getting the us gear axle. Rockauto.com wanted 150ish plus shipping for just the stub axle and Bronco Graveyard was 84 plus shipping. And i would think they have decent stuff as most people have had good experience with them.
The axle itself didn't explode but the u joint did. And I wasn't able to tell if the stub was damaged, but the inner side looks okay from what I can see.

Mine was the U joint too, just that the failure occured while in 4wd and going up a hill and was after i admittedly clutch dumped a few many times with odd size tires etc... LOL The axle yokes just happened to hit each other and shred , i never even found the missing u joint components, not once have i encountered it despite knowing where it happened
Lol been there with other vehicles. One was a 2wd light duty f250 that was converted to 4x4 with a solid dana 44 and 8.8. Pulled the m5od out for a c6 with a slight stall. Broke the right front axle joint and carnage ensued. Never knew a 5 0 had that kind of power lol.
Mine just popped on a steep boat ramp. No hard throttle or wheel spin, and it didnt even pop until i was on flat ground. I think the joint was frozen since they are non-greaseable. And as soon as it saw more stress than just steering movement it let go. The joint is still in the inner axle and caps look fine. It just disintegrated itself on the outer side.
I order a grease able joint this time. Yeah they are a little weaker, but for the amount of use my front axle gets I'm not worrying about it. Big snows and boat ramps are the majority of its use nowadays. Hell my favorite fishing spot has a ramp that is 45 degrees, so any water on the concrete gets super slick.

funny you mention dana 44, my gmc has a dana 44HD on the front of it, that side (passenger) is also where it exploded
If you see a lot of water you should consider calcium sulfonate grease for your u joints

Ah the passenger side drop gm axles. Worked on plenty of those. I dont see deep standing water alot anymore, but it used too. So that could have been a part of the problem. New stub axle, looks prety good.

make sure the splines in your hub locks whatever kind they are, that they fit tight. the damage you had might have been root caused from a issue there or possibly dmaaged them on its way to breaking
on a fwd car i h ave "wiped" out the splined portion of a wheel bearing with a cv axle that started out tight and was torqued down

will definitely double check, but I'm about 99 percent sure age killed the u joint ajoint coming apart did the damage.
Well it was a hurried day so I only managed to get one pic of the spindle during the job. But, have one of the old stub shaft. And remains of the old u joint.
One side sheared off clean at the cap, and the other, well the part of the cap that contacts the yoke is there. The end of the cap is gone and the companion cross piece of the joint was also missing.
The stub shaft looks okay at a fasy inspection, and i will soak it in Kroil and work at getting the old pieces out of it eventually.
The new stub was fantastic looking, 4340 steel and machined beautifully. Only issue on assembly was the heavier duty ujoint i purchased had beefier caps....causing them to not fit through the opening in the spindle. I ended up having to use a file and massage the edges of the cap to get it to slide through and even then I used a deadblow to get it in. But after that it all went together wonderfully.
