So... I am working on someone else's 2004 ford expedition. 2004.
I am taking out the fuse panel.
To replace the #r303 relay.
is this a common problem??
is there a TSB about it?
What the hell???
I already replaced the fuel pump. And the starter and the battery... although they were both fine.
Inspect the PCM relay ( top right relay module ), and socket for melted plastic. You'll usually see that before the actual fuel pump relay melts. Or you hear just a buzzing from the PCM relay when you turn the key to ON, but vehicle won't run. If you're really good at soldering you can get a new fuel pump relay off eBay and swap it out. That usually lasts for a year or so. Inspect all the solder points on the circuit board near the relay as well. In the end, the only reliable, long lasting fix, is to install a new fuse box. The fuse boxes are very specific to the model and date of manufacture of the vehicle, and options.
You can't just pull one out of a junkyard that "looks" the same and throw it in there.
You've replaced the fuel pump already. That's that hard part, and if it was the original one, it was past time for it.
Thanks so much for the links. I got the fuse box out. And will take the cover off to inspect the circuit board sometime later today. I will probably be using the links you added to order the new part.

I gotta disagree here. I replaced my relay almost 10 years ago and it still works. As far as I'm concerned, it's just as reliable as getting a new fuse box, but a helluva lot cheaper!
