Recently tried changing my fuel pump relay (believe its the one closest to the driver side fender in fuse panel under the hood?) because the terminals looked rough and it seemed to be getting hot which suggests to me the contact inside the relay isnt closing properly and generating an arc. Anyways I changed the relay out and noticed my fuel pumps didn't prime when I turned the ignition and the engine wouldn't start. So obviously the new relay doesn't work properly but the circuit diagram on both are identical. Could I possibly have a short somewhere or is this a common issue any of you have dealt with before? Any help is appreciated
Check the terminals inside the power distribution box. Its 27 year old plastic and sometimes the plastic terminal retainer breaks when disturbed. When you try to install the new relay, the terminal slides to the bottom of the box and doesnt make contact.
according to your diagram it would've been pcm power relay but when I pulled that relay and turned the ignition I couldn't hear the pump priming and with the relay back in place I could hear it prime
With no power to the PCM the fuel pump relay is never energized.
The diagram I posted is for a 1996 F-series truck with a gas engine.
that would make sense. Probably should have tried to find a diagram before i did my self test lol. I'll try it in the other relay slot tomorrow and see what happens.
