Just purchased a 2001 F350 4x4 dually diesel with 13,000 miles. Had problems engaging the 4 wheel with the manual floor shift lever. This is a base truck and does not have the esof switch on the dash. It also has factory chrome wheels. Stuck on a driveway incline with the front tires on pavement and the right rear tire spinning on ice. Shifted into 4x4 and the 4x4 dash light lit. Wheels did not engage. Could you tell me the process for engaging the 4x4. Do you have to travel a distance before it is engaged? I assume this is shift on the fly. The chrome wheels are covering the hubs. The owners manual is not specific as to which system this truck is equipped with. I would appreciate any advice. I am a newbie. Thank You
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Jan-03 AT 08:31 PM (EST)]If the center of the front hubs are covered, the first thing you need to do is pull the wheel covers and see if your hubs are locked. If they aren't locked the power will go through the front axle shafts but won't be transmitted to the front wheel/hub assembly.
You can shift from 2hi to 4hi and back on the fly when the hubs are locked.
Thanks for the info boys! I popped the center caps on the wheel covers and locked the hubs. Now my next question is, for how long and at what speeds can you drive with the hubs locked? Thanks Again!

You can drive as long as you want with the hubs locked. The speed limit that Ford prescribes is 55mph,but I believe the imposed speed limit is with 4wd.engaged.
Ok I have a 1999 f250 sd. Yes I turn the nice switch ion the dash and the light says I am in four wheel drive. But wait the front wheels don't lock. the front hubs are in auto. If i go out and lock the front wheel hubs then turn the switch they will lock. I think some one told me about a front seal the might be gone or leaking so i can't get a vac. does any one anything about this
That person is right, most likley you have a bad seal or hose.
Thankfully you have the manual over ride.
I beleive this is talked about up in the FAQ at the top of this board.
My brother-in-law has a 01 diesel with the auto hubs, and they just quit working. I told him to check out the vacuum lines, and as it turns-out, there is a plastic piece that is in a 90 degree angle that has just worn with time and gotten brittle. He just needs to replace that and they will be back to normal. Also, you should check to see if the vacuum pump is working. His mechanic told him that there is a vacuum pump just for the hubs that goes bad quite often, but this may be on the diesels only.
