Fuel filter change ????

I changed my fuel filter in my 2002 F250 psd this past weekend. It was the first time that I changed it since my 30k mile service performed by the dealer. The filter / cap that was original with the truck had a cap and filter element (two pieces). The filter that I purchased at the local parts store had the cap attached to the filter. The new filter/cap assembly came complete with instructions that recommended keeping the old cap just incase you went back to a filter element and separate cap configuration. When I changed my filter this past weekend the filter was very difficult to remove (this was odd considering the fact that the change of the filter at 10k and 20k was very easy). After inspection of the filter element / cap it appeared that the cap from a one piece (filter / cap assembly, maybe my old filter) had been cut off and used with a filter element. Is it possible to do this? Are there any problems that could be associated with doing this? I personally could not imagine ever doing something like this but could imagine the dealer, in an effort to save time and money, could do something this unprofessional. This would be just another problem in the long list of problems that I've had with the service dept. in the dealership that I purchased my truck.

When I first replaced my fuel filter it came in a two piece design and when I removed the stock filter it all came out with the cap. Turns out they were both the same filter just different ways of making it work in our trucks. I saved the OEM cap just in case and that was a good thing because I needed it when the next filter change came around. As for cutting the tabs off to make it a a two piece I cannot see why anyone would do this, unless they did not have a filter that would work? It would be hard to prove unless you had pic's of the old filter before it went in for service.

I am about to replace my fuel filter for the first time on my 2003 PSD 7.3 liter with 21,000 miles. Can anyone recommend a particular brand fuel filter? Should I go with an aftermarket or FORD OEM filter? I heard anything other than an OEM will void the warranty as long as thr truck is still under warranty coverage. Any insight would be appreciated.

I used a NAPA #No. 3518, on my last change, looks and fit like the original.

Tell me it isn't so. An aftermarket filter? Aren't you worried about your warranty?

Ford does not make filters. Ford buys its filters from a filter manufacturer. Your PSD came from the factory with a Racor filter. Genuine Motorcraft filters are made by Purolator or Racor. If you can find a Racor or a Purolator cheaper than a MC, buy it. They are just as good and will not affect your warranty.

Damn it jschira,

You caught me, lololol.

I was out in the boonies in AZ and needed a fuel filter change.
NAPA was nearby, so I broke down and bought the thing. I am not swearing by it by any means. Seems to be working, Just an option at the time.

I may be wrong here, but I don't think an aftermarket fuel filter would void waranty?

I think I have to worry more about being chipped?

I've got a couple of Racors out in the barn that I will use when needed.

I doubt that there is any filter being sold on the market today by any reputable company that does not meet OEM specs and will not, therefore, void your warranty.

Anything that the auto parts store will sell you is about 99.9% certain to be OK.
