Hello, I recently bought a 2018 f350 with a 6.7L When I first start the truck, and just after I turn it off it makes a groaning noise for 5 to 10 seconds. It sounds like it is coming from under the dash, but could be at the firewall inside the engine compartment.
Truck runs fine, but it is just kind of strange. Just wondering what it might be.
DEF pumps. the 6.7 makes all kinds of funky sounds when shut down, and you might be hearing the DEF pump extracting fluid from the SCR nozzle for freeze protection.
It might as it has to draw fluid back from the tank so it doesn't inject air. Just be grateful your bed doesn't moan. I get all kinds of strange looks when it does on mine.
There is a sound on start up and shut down that sounds like groaning almost like a roaring. Not the cooling fan, or maybe it is. But it doesn't last 5-10 seconds. It's more a second or two. As its getting warmer here, you can clearly hear the fan when its engaged, and on my F-150 it would stop once you reached about 10 MPH on start up if it was warm enough outside, even on a cold engine. Whatever it is on shutdown, I've noticed it when standing outside the truck. Its not the owl screeching sounds, or the cyclical pump sounds I would expect that does last that long, just a much deeper sound like something is spinning down after shutoff. I'll probably figure out what I am hearing this weekend when I change the oil.

Open your hood and stand by the passenger side tire and have someone turn the truck off. You should be able to pin point the noise after the truck is shutting down. Mine does it but wouldn't call it a groan sounds like something closing. Unless it's something different?
