I am finally getting around to installing a different pre pump filter. Currently I have the small clear wix inline filter, though I have had trouble with gelled fuel clogging it when it gets below -20.
Going to try a screw on filter base, though I can't mount it in the same spot, it needs to come back toward the tank where there is space for it.
For anyone who's done this, did you just cut into the hard line and run flexible fuel line to the filter nipple inlet? If I do this should I flare the fuel line? Or did you take the rigid line off all together and do flexible from the tank to the filter?

I did mine as part of a (Hutch Mod) from I believe “Diesel Site” in which you remove the strainers in the fuel tank. Heavy hose was provided to go from the fuel tank to the filter base….and then on to the pump.
if I remember correctly the OEM quick connects at the pick up on top of the tank are prone to suck air and the hose gets double clamped at the pick up hard lines in place of those . While it can be done cheaper as a DIY , I thought that the convenience of having instructions with all the material was well worth it. The frame spin on filter has a bleed off **** on the bottom as well for the water separator to catch what it can before going to the fuel bowl on top of the engine valley.
Thanks for the replies. I ended up just routing about four feet of flexible line back from the hard line to the new mounting location and ran line to the pump from the new filter housing.
Didn't really like adding about six feet of line for the pump to pull through but probably won't change anything.

won't effect it at all.
on my truck, we found the PreFilter while doing a Sump install, did not want to drop the tank for the Hutch mod.
left the OEM Return line as is, works just fine.
my truck spent 21 years in Texas as a Fire Battalion car.
it was obvious that the prefilter has been installed Decades ago, it was coated with many years of grime.
the proof that it works, was when we changed out the Fuel Bowl filter.
the element looked new, the bottom of the bowl was clean, we could see it thru the fuel still in the bowl as we did not drain it before removing the filter.
the cap on the bowl was a Wix that was screwed on tight by a Gorilla, we had to cut it off, it would not turn. I replaced it with a Ford cap and filter.
Where did you mount the filter housing? It's pretty busy right there near the pump so going back a couple of feet would be better.
Yes, moved it back. Between fuel tank and transfer case. Made a 90° out of 3/16 plate, drilled it out for the housing on one face and existing holes in frame on the top. Kind of protected by the T-case when mounted.
Got four feet of fuel hose, connected to end of hard line and ran it back to the inlet of the new housing.
you did a better job than the Fire Department mechanics,
they mounted mine to the floor of the cab, under the driver's seat.
After you posted your picture I crawled under the truck to see if there was a more creative option but didn't see how to do it without drilling into the floor pan, which I definitely didn't want to do.

Apparently yours is still hanging on so all good.
On mine there’s a double bracket that sandwiches the frame and the filter base mounts to that…….ill see if I can find one of my pictures..
I can’t find my picture, but very similar to this:
Seems that flex is usually double clamped at barbs on filter housing but questions remain whether hard line can be cut and flex line slide on and clamped without further preparation of hard line.

we didn't do anything special to the hard line.
just a bit of sand paper, and the special high pressure fuel hose clamps
When I need to put flexible hose over hard line that I've cut, I usually use my double flaring tool to put a little "bubble" at the end of the tubing just to make sure the hose and clamp aren't able to slip off of the tubing. I set up the tube in the clamp like normal, put the mandrel in the tube like the first step of a double flare but I only tighten it down enough to expand the tube and make it just a bit wider than nominal.

I'd call that special prep on hard line. Double flaring steel requires one heck of a tool.

Wish my son and I had thought of doing that,
but, it was getting dark in 30 minutes, and we had to leave at 0430 to go to New Yawk City, and he lives down in Jorja....
