I have a 1996 F150 that originally came with the 302w paired with a 4R70W that I lost oil pressure on. Long story short, I found a 393 with 3300 miles on it and bought it.
Going about this swap has been alright so far, I ripped off all of the smog stuff from the engine bay and have been cleaning it all up but now I have questions. The 393 is a 78' 351 with Roush 200 heads, 1.6 roller rockers, a Comp Cams 35-216-3 cam, double roller timing chain set, it has an all-star performance distributor (the vacuum port one), and shorty headers.
I'm looking to make this motor an EFI build even though it came with a carb intake, but I was wondering if using the factory 351 efi truck intake is a good idea? Or is there a better thing to do? I also know that the computer might not like this engine so what should I do about the EFI? And will it be fine with 24/lb injectors or do I need bigger? I plan to put a power adder on this engine in the future, so I am trying to save the hassle of changing everything later on. Thanks.
No that is not going to work with the OEM EFI setup. That could easily be a 400hp motor which means 30lb/hr minimum and the cam is a bit too extreme. I just saw a thread where a guy made 458hp with those heads on a 347. The good news is a Pimpx ECU will plug right into the factory wiring harness and give you full tuning capability.
The motor would run with the stock intake(if the intake ports seal) but it will be sucking through a straw so to speak. the motor deserves an intake like a TFS-R for example.
I don't know about a power adder, this motor alone will be breaking axles and transmissions if.. and that's a big if... you can get it to hook up... a pickup is pretty light in the rear end. I predict with just that motor you will find you have the ability to do burnouts at any speed by simply stabbing the throttle. It's going to be like having three 5.0's under the hood.
The cam is too extreme? The older gentlemen I got it from strictly used this engine for towing and it looks to be a towing camshaft when I looked it up. I'm looking to do this on a budget but not too much of a budget.
Honestly the shift controller isn't that much if you do plan on over 450 HP. And the prices lately on electronics has been good. I think you need like a full on Holley intake and injector combo deal.
No. But you could use stock parts and your budget option is to wire in a standalone like a microsquirt. If you're able to wire and you do a good quality set of injectors you're good. You could even upgrade to E85 Delphi sensor for 50 bucks and run extra power. But you would need:
The skill to modify and assemble the harness to the units harness. Properly. And knowledge of basic map install. And the. Tuning later on a dyno. With a shop who knows mega and micro squirt.
then you could run a turbo or water methanol. Pump gas and E85 or blends. And you could tune your MAP with DIY autotune software. A GM style MAP sensor. And any throttle body you want.
If you have those things I might know a guy who can sell you a microsquirt for a deal....
you transmission will most likely need a controller. Can handle street horsepower. With a torque converter.
As for a stock computer it will run only so much cam. And it will idle up and down or not run at all if you have too much cam. Making driving in the rain and stopping really annoying.
You've made so many mistakes with the truck I have, or (my heart has) **** to pump
Good luck with the truck, after removing the smog your options are limited and damn sure your processor is insufficient for a hotrod motor
The trans controller is the "least" of your troubles
I would go with the Holley system, but you'll need to learn to "tune"
Buddy of mine put 90,000 dollars into a 69 Corvette he bought new and has a Sniper on it
He keeps calling me saying it runs like chit / puke
Not saying my heart pumps **** for him because he's my buddy, but yeah, I'm in no hurry to help him because I'd never hear the end of it
