Most of the time any premium brake pad will do far better than the ones that Ford puts on.
As far as converting the rear drums to disc brakes....I don't see the benefit, considering the cost.
I think that you be just fine with a good set of premium shoes and pads.
Another thing to think about......
More often than not, the type of tires that your running can be the culprit of poor braking performance rather than the brakes them selves.
For example, with the GY RTS's on my truck when I bought it, the truck seemed to take miles to slow down from 60 mph. I slapped on some new rubber, and viola much better braking.

I replaced my front brake pads with some Rabestos brake pads. They came in a blue box. I could tell a huge difference. Once I put them on I went for a test drive and some old lady pulled right out in front of me. Since I was use to the origional braking I slammed on my brakes and it about threw me through the windsheild! Good thing I was wearing my seatbelt. Hope this helps.

My truck has disc brakes at all 4 corners....which is a good thing on a college campus. I'm thinking about going all the way and upgrading to larger rotors and better calipers up front and better rotors in the rear. Baer has some great kits and I can pick and choose to get what suits me the best.
