I have a '97 explorer with 185,000 miles on it. It has had a little money put into in the pas few months. New brakes, new shocks, and some transfer case parts. I was wondering how much it would cost to do a total rebuild on the engine, and if it was worth it. I am quite attached to this car and do not want to give it up. Are there any larger explorer engines that would be better to purchase and put a new one or one with low miles on it. Oh yeah it has the 4.0 V6 in it.
1975Ford - this post is over a year and a half old. I don't think Bhanson has been sitting around waiting for a response from us. Where did you find this anyway?
Thanks for the reply but my explorer died two weeks ago with 210K on it. Electrical system went wack and fried the charging system. So I have gotten rid of it. One of the best cars I have ever owned.
So you got another 30K out of it huh? Good I guess. My most cost effective vehicle I ever bought was a 74 260 Z for $500. I put maybe $400 in maintenance into but drove it for 112,000 miles - not to 112K but put that much on it. Sometimes when it is time to say goodbye, we do.
By the way - I got $100 trade in on that Z towards my 93 Explorer that is still my daily driver.
My sister has a 91 Ford Explorer 4x4 XLT w/4.0 liter engine, she hauls a 18' camping trailer out in the forest and does camping. She driven the explorer to California, Arizona, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, & Utah. The Explorer now has over 270,000 miles and still purrs.
I'd be curious to know what type of maintenance was performed on that truck (i.e. oil, filter, transmission oil changes, etc.). That mileage is pretty good and whatever oil is used sounds like a good choice for other EXs.
