I've been having this issue for over a year now with my 6.8 v10 2013 f450 Ever since I had a new engine put in, its been surging. Its been through the parts cannon special at a couple shops, new ECM, new cat, new o2 sensors, new fuel pump, purge valve, maybe some other parts i cant remember off the top of my head.
The truck will surge very rhythmically, at any rpm under any load in gear. Truck has plenty of power, pulls a trailer just fine, but the surging is brutal, jerks the truck when its under a heavy load. Strange thing is when I unplug the MAF, the truck runs great, no surging at all under any load. I swapped the maf already with a known good unit, so I don't believe the sensor itself is the issue. Truck has been smoke tested, had starting fluid sprayed all over vacuum lines and intake, no results there.
Anyone else ever experience this with their truck? If so, what ended up being the solution for you?
Try installing an O2 spacer on the downstream O2 sensor(s).
I've seen a number of conversations from motorhome owners with the F53 chassis experience engine surging after an aftermarket cat was installed. The cats are not quite good enough for the PCM's calibration so the PCM is constantly adjusting trying to get the downstream O2 sensors to read within the limits of the calibration resulting in engine surging.
Be sure to reset KAM and then take it for a long enough drive for the PCM to rebuild its dynamic lookup tables.

Okay i may have to try that, I just dropped a ford cat in the truck, because the truck burnt 2 aftermarket cats, so I went with a ford in case they were bad cats.
Should i put a spacer even with a ford cat in it? I'd be willing to try that.
If the new cat hasn't yet been broken in (about 300 or so miles), I'd do that first and monitor to see if the surging is still present. If it is, then add the spacer. You can buy 18MM anti-foulers at your auto parts store and drill out the hole to accommodate the larger tip of the O2 sensor. Stack two spacers, if needed.
If the truck burned up two previous cats, there's something wrong with the mixture control.
Yeah thats what I was thinking, that's why I didn't want to drive this new cat yet, because the old one burned in about 1000 miles. And the Ford cat is double the price.
May just end up driving it for a few hundred miles without a trailer to keep low load and make sure it doesn't get too hot.
Thanks for your help ill update if i see any results.
Issue solved! Truck ended up having a significant intake leak at the intake tuning valve on the front of the intake manifold. Previous shop apparently doesn't know how to perform a smoke test. Thanks for the replies
At least the truck has a bunch of new parts
Hi, I just joined this forum after reading this thread. I am having the same issue as NIckspin714. I just purchased a 2015 F53 v10 motorhome. Only 15k miles. The MH runs good but going up a grade/underload I noticed the "surging" as well. I wasn't sure if this was normal or not. I got a P219A and B error code, air/fuel imbalance after driving it 200 miles. I've changed the O2 sensor, cleaned MAF, checked purge control and drove it again. After driving about 200 miles again, stopped for fuel and a few seconds after starting, I got the P219AB code. Took it to local "recommended" RV mechanic-clueless.
The MH has an aftermarket CAT installed in 2022 so before I do anything else, can projectSHO89/Hotshot or anyone give me some more info on the O2 spacer? I can install the spacers but before I do, I would really appreciate some feedback on this issue before I have to resort to finding another mechanic to solve this.
I appreciate any response here; I've posted on other RV forums and have had zero help.
