Thumbs down 351 W fuel problems ?

I have a 84' F 150 351 W with automatic trans and about 51,000 miles.
I noticed today that the catalytic converter was red hot and smoking from just a few minutes after driving my truck during warm up. The truck is all original, including engine, carb, etc.. Other than tunes ups not much else has been done.
I was told I'm probably getting a way too rich mixture and unburned fuel is basically fouling up my converter after its exhuasted out of the engine.
First, does this make sense?
Second, Is it best to re-build the Holley 4BBl on it, or should I do somethign else?
Lastly, if I do rebuild, should I change the jets or tuning of my current carb to meet the CRAPPY gas they now sell?

Thanks,

Scott ( whew, I thought she was going to burn up this mornin!!)

If the truck is running ok it's probably not your carb at fault, likely the cat is plugged.
