Clark 282V or 285V identification
From what I've read, the shift patterns on 282V's are weird like this
R | 2 | 5
1 | 3 | 4
or
1 | 2 | 4
R | 3 | 5
Mine is a pretty normal pattern with
R | 2 | 4
1 | 3 | 5
Also I've read the 282V has a short 4th (6.99, 4.09, 2.17, 1.17, 1.00) where you have to shift 4L 5L 4H 5H. The 285V has a more normal spread (6.99, 4.35, 2.25, 1.45, 1.00). I don't have a tachometer to really compare mph and rpm to verify, but the way it shifts feels a lot more like the 285V gear spacing. If it matters, my rear axle is 8.12 and 5.83.
I would be interested to know if anybody has some more information about this transmission like confirmation of its gear ratios and whether I should be doing the 4L 5L 4H 5H shift pattern.
Well. In my '73 F600 I have a 282V36 :
The tag is high on the passenger side of the trans, toward the rear. I do have to shift 4L 5L 4H 5H; it's really obvious if I try to shift 4H 5L that it's wrong (engine RPMs are wrong, I mean). My truck has 6.17 / 8.58 rear axle ratios.
From what I can tell, the numbers after 'V' indicate trans ratio options. My trans' 3rd gear syncrhos are shot -- it's double-clutch or float every shift into/out of 3rd -- and I have a hankering to swap out the trans . . . maybe. I don't drive the truck all that much.
You might post this question over in Large Trucks, though there are probably only a couple of dozen regulars there. These days, I'm one.
