99 Ranger - 4WD Problem

My 4WD is acting flaky. It works fine when I put it in 4 high (or low for that matter), until I have to stop. When I try to get going again, only the rear wheels turn. The 4WD indicator stays lit on the dashboard. The only way to make all 4 wheels turn is to switch to 2WD and back in to 4WD, and it does the same thing at the next stop sign. There are no unusual noises, etc. Any ideas on what the problem is and what I can check before taking it to my mechanic?

My truck is:

99 Ranger XLT
4.0 L V6 Engine
Auto Transmission

Thanks!

Bubba

If you have the 4WD engaged on pavement (where it is not needed) the driveline torque can sometimes make shifting difficult. If this is not the case, check the fluid level, proper fluid (Mercon ATF). It could also be the shifting motor (Lots of posts on this forum about that). If all of the above is OK, you may have some more serious mechanical problems in the transfer case.

With 4 high, it doesn't matter if I engage it while moving or not. 4 low can only be engaged with the truck stopped and in neutral.

I think the point he was trying to make was that you NEVER use 4wd on the street, ONLY on a surface were the tires can slip.

Oh, sorry. That is correct, normally, I only use it to get going from a stop, or up hills that are slick, and when the roads are snow and ice covered.
