I am putting a 302 into an 86 F150, kind of a project over the winter hopefully road worthy for next spring. I want to do some minor mods (header 4bbl and possibly cam) to pep it up a bit. Right now I am driving a 91 with a 300 I6. I miss the power and tire turning ability of the 302, but when I go back to it, I don't want to lose the low down torque and towing ability of the 300. What can I do to the stock engine to get more off idle torque?
well i just built my 302 and it has plenty of pep and get up and go when the rpm range is there.( i need a stall but have not money). anyway, 90 block 90 heads rebuilt of course. mellings 286 duration cam crank turned 10, weiend intake, 600 cfm edelbrock carb. it is bored .060 over with speed pro coated hypereutectic pistons. i am putting it into my 91 tbird soon when i get the money for the stall. i have gt40 heads off of the 5.0 tbird that i will swap and port those out. this thing will get up and go. but the cam is to big for the stock convertor so i don't have off idle power. but i think the extreme energy 4x4 cam is for off idle torque. it is fairly cheap go to jegs.com i think it is a comp.
You want a cam with lots of lift, not duration. Like the first reply, an RV cam, if such a thing exists anymore. Crane has a better selection of Ford cam grinds than Comp. Call them for a recommendation. The real solution is a 351 instead of a 302.
Thanks, but I own the 302 now. I have tried playing around with desktop dyno, and found that a split duration cam (short compared to most) with a longer exhaust than intake helps with the torque. I was using the comp cam designed for the 289. Anyone suggest anything else?
