When releasing clutch, the pedal "jumps" as it comes up making a smooth take off difficult. All new clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, throw out bearing, etc. Z bar is unobstructed and has smooth action when disconnected. Z bar bushings new and greased well. I don't know what else to check. Any ideas appreciated
What year and series are your truck? What engine and transmission? All original or has anything been swapped out over the years? There are a couple of things that come to mind. Springs. There should be one or two springs in the linkage mix. Sometimes a spring can get hung up on things in its travel path. Sometimes the hook on the end of the spring can drag or get hung up on something and create some pause followed by a quick release. Another is the throw-out bearing retainer. This piece surrounds the transmission input shaft and provides the surface that the bearing rides back and forth on. Wear grooves in this retainer can cause the bearing to get caught up and then once enough pressure is against it then it can free up again causing a sudden release. A new retainer will have a smooth surface for the bearing to ride on. Small grooves may not look like much, but it does not take a lot to mess up proper function. An older bearing that has worn some may not have gotten hung up on the grooves as easily as a new bearing might.
Here's what a new one looks like without any wear. This is just an example as they varied by transmission and sometimes 2 wheel drive versus 4 wheel drive can make a difference.
It might be worth working the clutch some with everything hooked up and the engine not running. Listen for any noises and see if you get a feel, a noise or anything that seems unusual. Get someone else to work the pedal while you watch the linkage and inspect what it's doing. Might be able to see the problem as much as anything. Or eliminate things that it obviously isn't, too.
It's a 63 F100 with new crate 302. When I installed the clutch parts I greased everything and the action was smooth. The LUK clutch came with several throw out bearings but the one I used looked like the only one that fit correctly. I'll just keep driving it and hopefully it will smooth out some. Otherwise I'll go back in and take a look. Appreciate the help
