Idle question

2024 350 6.7 powerstroke
starts at a slow idle then speeds up after a few minutes
If I tap the gas pedal it goes down again then after a while speeds up again to about 800 rpm.
Is this normal? Should I let it idle at the higher rpm?
How long should I warm it up when not towing and when towing?
Thanks in advance.
Ian

High idle seems to be normal under the right circumstances but nobody seems to know what the circumstances are. A couple of weeks ago, it was really cold out, below 20 and mine went to high idle. Like you said, when I touched something, it dropped down but then went back up.

Probably has something to do with charging rate on alternator.

Yes it's normal.
Put your seat belt on, check your mirrors and drive. Extended idling is not good. You are better off to just drive normal to warm up your truck.

I idle long enough to get the oil moving then drive on a light throttle until the water temperature is normal. Extended idling, as stated, is not good. A diesel motor is just too efficient at idle to warm up quickly, unlike a gasser.

Yiu turn on cruise, set park brake, adjust idle speed via accell decell slide swith on colum

I'm sure that Ford's legal department probably put the kabosh on that idea. No telling how many knuckleheads would find a way to launch their trucks through garage doors or run over pets and/or children misusing or not following procedures for such a feature (somehow)...

My '17 does the same thing. Much more noticable then the previous '17 I had which was very quiet. I've always let my truck run just to get the oil circulating in the engine. Not too long maybe 2 or 3 minutes then hit the road. I still let my engine cool down a bit after running on a hot day just to let the turbo or turbo's cool down. This was drilled in my head when I started driving semi trucks in the early 70's. Company required 3 to 5 minutes starting a cold engine and the same times to cool off.
