I have a stock 2000 F250 4x4 cc sb auto 5.4. I need tires. I really want the 265 BF Gooderich AT's but 90% of my driving is highway. The other 10% is hilly snow/ ice covered cottage roads.
If it were just looks I'd go for 295's but I want to cut through the snow.
Here's the questions, is the traction offered by the BF's that superior to a consevative tread pattern on a regular all season truck tire? and how to they do on the highway? Noisy? am I going to have to replace them every 10000 miles?
I am open to suggestions if anyone has a tire out there that they think is better.
Thanks,
Superbent

I had a 93 F-350 CC 4X4 that I had BFG All-terrains on.
They worked well in snow. Mud they load up quickly and give you slicks.
I put 60,000 miles on 1 set before replacing them.
They are fairly quiet & the new style KM looks good.
This spring I plan to put a set on my 02 F-250 SC PSD, Since I am sure that the stock tires will be "worn out".

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Dec-02 AT 07:43 PM (EST)]The BFG Mud Terrain TAs are a great tire and will last a good 50k-60k miles or so depending on the use. They are quiet on the road and offer great off road traction and I think will be what your looking for in the snow/ice. I also think they look, ride, and perform better than the BFG ATs. Hope this helps.

Regarding BFG's on snow/ice I was just reading in my 4x4 mag that the All Terrain T/A KO was the only AT tire to receive the "Severe Snow Tire Grade" from the RMA and RAC (see section below).
Don
--------------------------
Severe Snow Tire Grading
On February 1, 1999 the Rubber Manufacturer's Association (RMA) and the Rubber Association of Canada (RAC) introduced a winter tire grading. These tires are specifically designed for severe snow conditions and meet snow traction performance requirements. Tires meeting this standard are marked with a pictograph of a peaked mountain. This standard helps drivers choose a tire that will help make their winter driving safer.

Dont know if this matters or not but I've had both the AT and the Mud Terrains and I found that the AT's pick up more rocks on gravel and then spit em out at your truck at higher speeds. The MT's have a larger "void" between lugs and small rocks dont get wedged in there...

Before you purchase new tires, I would suggest that you go to the tire rack website and do a comparison. http://www.tirerack.com/
I think the best tire out there right now for your type of driving is the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo. You can compare this tire to any tire of your choice. The marks for this particular brand of tire are tremendous.
Also, when I tried to purchase my tires at local shops, they had a hard time locating them because they were low in stock. I actually ordered my tires over the internet and received them in FOUR days.
Check out this comparison between the BF Goodrich and the Bridgestone.
Good Luck and happy hunting...
P.S. You'll notice below that I have the BF Goodrich Tires on my truck. They are great tires, but I wish I did more research before I purchased them. My wifes truck has the Bridgestone and they are better than the BF Goodrich. Just my opinion...

Thanks for all the advice,
I think I'll check out the Bridgestones $ in Cdn. vs. the BFG's.
Big plus for Bridgestone is the availability of an E load rated tire.
I carry heavy loads once in a while and the Ministry of Transportation has a few too many officers with nothing to do.
We'll see.

Ditto (again) on the tendency to pick up a lot of little rocks in the
treads.... but I have seen no ill effects from this so far. The AT's
are pretty quiet on the HWY - I love them so far. As for snow capabilities,
I cannot comment. I live in FLA......

I will have to second ROCKFIV0. I have the Dueller A/T Revo 694 on my truck. My tire guy was telling me about the UNI-T tread and tread life and the this and that, and I am nodding my head thinking, "Just gimme the tahrs. They look good on the truck and my buddy sez they are the bees knees."
Well, I got them on the truck after running my Steeltexs 65,000 (mostly highway) miles. These tires are great. They are not noisy. They don't ride any harder than the Steeltexs even though I went up a size. I went with the 285s. I didn't change my speedo. My bro calculated the difference to be 3% greater diameter. Not enough for me to justify fixin. But I digress.
The best thing about these tires is the wet performance of them. I almost can't get my truck to slide sideways in the rain like I loved to do with the Firestones. Another thing I noticed today was that I don't get that spray from the front of the tire when going through a deep puddle in the road. The Firestones would throw a big spray ahead of the truck, but the 'Stones do not at all. Pretty cool.
I got my first taste of snow in them on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. They were great. I have a plow but don't plow commercially. I just clear our company lot and a commercial property we own. These tires did not disappoint me at all.
I don't have first hand knowledge about the BFGs, but I do with the 'Stones. I can say I like them a lot.
I can post a photo of my truck with them in my gallery if you would like to see what the 285s with white letters looks like on a white SC SB with black fender flares.
Good luck

I've got 85k miles on my rears and 30k on my fronts. The rears still have about 3/8" on em' fronts look like the day I bought em'. I do mostly highway driving with little braking. Road noise is not bad. The _only_ thing that I don't like about them is that they grab the road and take the truck with it. i.e. if there is a groove in the road the tires try to follow it. But, that happens to also be the thing I like about them, you can cruise through puddles at 70 and these tires keep the truck sure footed. (Not that I recommend do so) but sometimes you can get surprised by one and its nice to know that the tires are on your side.

I have a 02 F-250 SD 4x4 xtra cab short bed, I was thinking of replacing the stock tires with a BFG 285/75R16 as well as putting the 2 inch Pro Comp lift kit. I would like to see a picture of one first before I go ahead with the purchase. Can anyone tell me where I could see a pic of one. Thanks for your help

Well thanks to all for their two cents worth.
I took the Bridgestone suggestion and had a set of 265's mounted today.
I know the steeltex tires were bad but the difference is incredible. They were worn, but they were never even close to that good when they were brand new.
I can accelerate as fast in two wheel drive now as I was able to in 4 wheel drive with the steeltex's.
Oh yeah, almost forgot now I can stop too. Guess I'll have to justify the air horn some other way.
Thanks again.
