I have a 1998 F 150. The insturments stopped working.I put in a 5amp fuse and they worked for a day. I put in another fuse and drove about 20 mi started the truck after it was turned off for about 20 min and they stopped working again. I know somebody has the answer.
Yes you've got a short somewhere.
I cant think of any common spots that I've seen on these.
Finding a short like this can be a real pain in the neck.
Maybe send HomerWinzlow a message and see if he has any ideas for you.
You could try a 10A fuse but putting in a bigger fuse is just covering up the problem. If you put too big a fuse in you'll let the smoke out of the wiring and that's not good
HomerWinzlow's user name is HomerWinzlow
He is a Ford tech too with lots of electrical experience so maybe he has seen your problem.
I contacted Mr Winzlow and he was right on the money. seems that the wiring going to the overdrive switch on the gear selector will rub on the steering column and short.I was able to tape them problem solved. glad i didnt put in a 10 amp as thw wires were starting to discolor. thanks and have a happy holiday
