Question identifying engine year

Is there a way to tell what year an engine is? Is there a de-coder or something that a person could use to translate the casting numbers on a block?

Thanks,
Ron

Hey Thanks Fordman!
I didnt look by the oil filter, but the numbers on the passenger side rear of the block are: D1VE-6015-A2B
If that doesnt do it, I will look for the numbers by the oil filter on friday and post again.

Thanks Again
Ron

on V8's, its easier to look at the casting numbers on the intake (if original) than finding them on the block. Just for future refrence.

That engine was designed in 1971 & it is a 460 .

It could have come out of a car or truck.
It was originally designed for the Lincoln.(V)

Casting numbers are also on the Heads,Intake,Exhaust manifolds.

Get me the other casting digits & I can tell you when it was cast .

This will tell me which year of vehicle that engine was put in.

See the bottom of this photo.
That's what you are looking for.

Can anyone give me a particular location on the head or block on a 300 6-cylinder to start scraping grease off to look for casting numbers? Manifolds are no good since I had to have them swapped out. Thanks.

D1VE-A2B is a '71 - '78 460 block, you need to find the date code to zero it in. 460's didn't come stock until '74 so it's a swap for sure.

On a 460, the head casting numbers are just below the sparkplugs .
The date code is under the valve cover in the oil galley.

RE: The block

Just up the side of the block above the starter.

Intake:
On top .Near the firing order casting
