engine options

hi yall i've been scrolling here for a while don't know how active people still are but i'm young and dumb and decided to tear apart my first truck a 1964 ford f100 i love to death her name is jenga
this name was picked by my friends because every time you touch it it falls apart well in a aspiration to change that winter last year i pulled it into the garage and immediately tore into it is now cab off engine out some rust fixed still lot to fix and engine less i really like the look of the ford 460 but i was curious if anyone had suggestion for a more affordable option i am sticking with wanting a v8 for sure but open to any suggestions and below is an attached picture of her
this is about a month after i got it 4 years ago

Some questions are: What will be its main purpose? What did it have for an engine and transmission? How deep is your wallet?

Some questions for you: What will you do with the truck? What did it have for an engine and transmission? How much time do you have to spend on it? How deep is your wallet? Things always take longer and cost more. Life has a way of re arranging your priorities.

Welcome to the forum! Cool truck, she's a beaut! When choosing an engine, first ask yourself what your end goal is. What do you want your truck to do? If you're looking for stump pulling power everything else be damned, the 460 is an excellent choice. Just know that 10mpg will be typical and if you can afford to feed that, great. If you just want a really nice truck to go cruising in and enjoy the crap out of relatively economically, you can't beat a 302 automatic overdrive of some fashion combination. It'll be easy to build, easy to fit in the engine compartment, and not break the bank doing it. It'll have plenty of power and do burnouts down the street if that's what you're into, or just go for miles on road trips. You can't go wrong with that. My 2c. Good luck with your project.

Well, V8 is one thing, but what is your goal? Do you want to have a lot of torque for towing or a high rpm screamer with a lot of horses and lower torque?
What is wrong with the current engine? If it is nothing too serious you could rebuild this engine or find another cheap 352 on Facebook Marketplace.
In general, FE's are expensive and have bad mileage. A cheaper option would be a used 302. Needs some adaptation in the truck to install, but doable.

he did say he was young and dumb J/K welcome to FTE

I will also hit that horse what will the truck be used for?
I like to be different and ever body runs a 302 and a 460 just is not my cup of tea to show I dont have any "man hood" and like to stop at every gas station
Now if I had to tow weight then yes a 460 would be the go to motor or a diesel.

I have been looking at crown vic's as a project and you can find them pretty cheap. A 4.6 and the 4R07W OD trans might be the way I would go to be different.
You would need a stand alone computer for the EFI and the trans to make it work in the truck. OR swap the full CV frame under the truck

I also like a Detroit diesel 4BT in a pickup. It is smaller to fit most engine bays and can be "turned up" to make some good power.

BTW I run a 300 six in my 81 F100 to be different, people love it at shows but I also use the truck to pull a 20' enclosed trailer to car shows for our club.

Engine choice

To me the most important thing is it keep it all FORD
Try to find a set up from a fuel injected 4.6 Mustang with a 5 speed that was totaled when it was running. There are kits that you can convert the engine to a stand alone ignition using a carburetor.
  • Also there are kits that will bolt the engine into your frame which will keep it simple.

Small block fords (i.e. 302/351) are fairly economical to acquire. You can spend a ton of money on them if you want. Lots of options for parts and aftermarket modifications like stroker kits, heads, intakes, etc. And they have several choices for 5 speed manual and/or auto trannies.

302 and a 5 speed. When looking for an engine don’t pass over an EFI 5.0, simple to swap over to a four barrel intake and non computer distributor.

Unless you just fall into a sweetheart deal, the 289-302/5.0 will be your best choice. Plentiful, inexpensive, a lot of transmission options, a ton of aftermarket support, and it is an easy swap. Keep us updated with your project. Take a ton of pictures, we love pictures!

Speaking from experience, if you want to buy a rebuilt or reasonably fresh engine, there’s no way around the fact that small blocks are more plentiful.

where I live, Yes, plenty of 460’s for sale but they are all laying in the dirt with half a rotted tarp covering them. I didn’t see many 429’s or FE’s at all. A fresh slightly warmed over 460 eventually found me but I looked for a few months before that…..even then I had to have it shipped from CA to NY. If I was in the small block market, I’d have found the right one locally in a week.

My truck had already been swapped to a 460 (was a factory 352 truck) so that’s why I stayed with a big block- but these trucks are not go fast hot rods so a 302/351 would be more than adequate for a cruiser.
