I'm doing some electrical work on my 01' Excursion....new lighting interior and exterior, replacing stereo and adding powered Sub, new CB radio (I'm old school), adding brake controller, adding a large power inverter in the rear for tool power, fish/hunt camp, etc. Adding new fog and light bar, as well as top marker lights, etc.
My question is there are 2 batteries, are one of them (captains side or drinkers side) that is secondary?
That depends on which battery is being supplied the charging current from the Alternator. In any case, they must be the same Age, and CCA, and brand/model.
on my truck, the Driver's side is the only battery with the heavy 2 ought cable, I have a 340 Amp alternator, so that cable has to be BIG. and I have a Winch that pulls a lot of current when loaded, and I wanted the Alternator to be able to put out enough current at Idle to keep up with the Winch.
Rainmaker has tied both batteries to his Alternator, it is also a MechMan like mine... they regulate at 14.5-15.0 volts,, depending on underhood Temperature.

If both batteries are connected, then they are a bank, and neither (or both) are primary / secondary. As both will respond to any load applied / voltage change.
You can split them out using relays and such to make one a primary (or starting battery) and one a secondary (or house battery), but assuming your 01 Excursion is a diesel and the batteries are in the factory configuration, then there is no primary or secondary , they're just both batteries that are working together all the time.
(In Derek's voice) ,,,So as long as the battery has a go handle, a feller can hook up to either one he wants to.
