I have a 1983 4.9l and have put a new 1 BBL carb on. There is a hole near the 2 studs that hold the carb to the manifold, and I can't figure out what it's purpose is. Without doing anything about it, it doesn't seem to effect the performance but I am curious what it is for. Any ideas?
similar but not in the same position. So that is what that hole is for? should it be plugged or not? I have removed all smog related parts. I am of the school that thinks that Ford made manifolds that would fit multiple applications, and this may be one of them.
Dose the hole look like this? I put a small freeze out plug in mine for a different reason as I thought water might of come out it as I am using hot water to heat the intake manifold with the EFI EXH manifolds.
Normally the EGR plate is left on the intake and the carb on top of that or the throttle cable dose not line up right.
People unbolt the valve with the 2 bolts at the front and use a tin can to block off the valve and bolt it back on.
Others that dont like the valve sticking out will hack off the part the valve is bolted to flush and then used JB Weld to fill in the hole and finish off the look and it is now a spacer plate.
BTW the same intake manifold is used for non-ERG trucks (Canada) and they have a spacer plate that blocks that port just no way to bolt the valve on.

I did what you said with the EGR... hacked it up until it was JUST a spacer.
To fill the extra hole left behind by my hackery l stuffed some stainless steel screen down in there and glopped hi-temp JB Weld epoxy on top of it. Your fix is much more elegant.
Those Canadian block-off doodads are exceptionally hard to find... l tried.
As I said I used the plug because I thought coolant could come up and into the EGR valve and leak out.
This was because I run EFI EXH manifolds and the intake dose not get heated now and I wanted to drive the truck when cold out and not have problems.
I also did not want to do what you did with the valve as I did not know what DMV needed for inspections at the time for older cars / trucks.
With keeping it in place I could make it look like it was hooked up and working.
I was shocked the DMV just handed plates to me and never wanted to see the truck! It could have been the biggest POS on the road!
