Hey The mufflerless exhaust is a good sound. I cut it off an just welded the pipes back to where they turn out in front of my rear passenger side tire. I have a utility bed on it so i just turned it out there. It has a loud deep sound. get some real good sounds out when it starts up on a cool morning ! kinda has some rack off sound to it too. I may later weld up a double outlet an run pipes out the back or go to a 3'' pipe all the way from converter. then agian I may gut the converter too.
Hope this answers your curiosity....

Damn! Old thread!! This was back when I Moderated this forum!

In reference to the above quote, I just want everyone who reads it to understand that 5W-20 and 5W-30 are the SAME weight when cold!

One does not flow better when cold than the other due to the second number.

They are both 5 weight base oils.

Mine has 82,000 miles on it. I use Motorcraft 5w20. Wallmart keeps it in stock.

It might burn a quart in 2500 miles if I work it hard otherwise I do not have
to add oil between the 3000 mile oil changes.

I live in Houston Texas.

No Prob

I have used 5-20w since new, I am at 88,000 miles and in 3,000 miles she does't use any oil. I live in Washington, DC and travel to upstate NY at least once a month. The truck works on occasion pulling a 35 foot tag along RV up over the mountains.

I have 120000 on my 5.4, I change the oil every 3,000 and it never uses any oil (5w20) Also I don't baby it. If I am just driving around or going to work, I use my Tarus. When I use "Big Ugly" We are pulling the dump trailer (Grossing 19-20,000) or the goose neck with farm equipment (Grossing 14-19500) Unless we are relaxing with the RV, it only weights a little over 7000. The only hard time, we have ever had was when we hauled topsoil out of the back 40 for the kids house. Since we were not getting on the streets we over loaded the dump trailer hauling 6+cu yds at a time. It did require we put it in 4wd drive due to spinning the rear tires.

This came from a Shell oil rep when I worked at a Cat.eq. dealership.

The first number (5w) is the wieght. the second number (20) is the load carrying capabilities. 5w20 is a 5weight oil with the load carrying capabilities of a 20 wieght oil.
5w20 and 5w30 are the same weight/thickness.

I have also heard that the reason for using lighter weight oils was originally because of premature overhead camshasft failure. The thicker, heavier weight oils would not get up there fast enough at start up.

the M1 i use is 0w-20. know i don't know if i will keep using it. i wish i could get it in the gallon jugs. the wifes honda has to use the same oil as the truck. i ask the ford and the honda dealer, they both said if i did not use the 5w20 or the m1 0w20 it would void the wrnt.. so that is what i use. no way in heee?? i will pay close to $100 for an oil change so i do it myself.. valvoline and jiffy lube wanted to change more just because it was a 4x4. no way. i only have two grease fittings on truck. also the honda is a 4x4 and was going to charge more.

I'm always surprised that people feel they know better when it comes to lubrication than the engineers at Ford that actually design the engines.

I'm using the Motorcraft 5W20, not a drop lost between changes, temps from -40C to +35C, 70,000kms on my '02 V10, no problems.

That being said, everyone is certainly free to use whatever type of oil they feel is best.

I've been using Castrol 5w30 dino oil, changing at 3K miles religiously.

I personally do not believe anything Ford says about oil, longevity, etc. It's really all about CAFE ratings - like someone else said, CAFE fines are huge and they will do anything they can to get another .1 MPG out of a vehicle. Back when I got my oil changed by my Ford dealer once or twice in my 4.6L's (because it was in for warranty work) they used the standard Motorcraft 5W30. It was getting brown in only 1K miles! Using Castrol GTX 5W30, it could easily go 3K before the oil started even looking used. That's a big difference. Using that information, and applying it to what Ford says about 5W20 and especially Motorcraft oil, I just don't think ANY oil with the Motorcraft brand on it is worth anything. Did Ford magically change from using bottom-of-the-line oil up to the year 2000 and is now using something SO good you have to use it for longevity? Sure, they suddenly took such great interest in our motors lasting longer for some reason. I've read everything I can get my hands on, and in one release from Ford, I noticed the "improved mileage and emissions" comment. Yeah, CAFE alright...

My '96/'97 4.6L's (t-bird and cougar) required 5w30 oil - so did the early V10's. My '01 says plainly on the oil filler cap 5W20 - do I do it? Nope - there is no difference internally from 2000 (or whatever year they switched) to 2001 - they didn't magically change all the "nominal" clearances on cams and cranks . And, Ford has said 5w20 is good for the older modulars that said 5w30, so that's basically a veiled admission that the motors did not require the oil change.

Still, I use dino oil....

NOTE: There is a specific rating for evaporation of oil, and in the synthetic market, Amsoil uses it as one of many specs to push their own oil - they have the lowest evaporation rate of anyone out there. That's why many of you may see your Ford modular using oil on synth - I don't remember the specifics anymore, but I computed that you would lose about .5qts per 3K oil change with synth compared to dino with Amsoils published spec for Mobil 1. My 20K mile V10 uses NO oil between changes nor do either of my 4.6L's. And I mean it - NONE.

Ford recommends the weight that fits the broadest range of its customers. Waxy is right in using the recommended weight because he runs in a climate where it gets pretty cold. In those temps I would run 5W20 too.

But like jschira, I run in a hot climate: Phoenix AZ. Temp never gets below 40F, and in the summer on the highway it can get to 120F+. It just doesn't make sense to run a 20 weight at that temp. My choice is 10W-30 year round with no problems or oil loss.

I am of the opinion that the Ford engineers would agree with my oil choice given my operating temps.

I may be mistaken, but were oil weights not created so that you would get proper lubrication throughout temperature ranges. I run heavy equipment and base what I use on that criteria.

I've been running 0w-20 Mobil 1 since day one and my rig hasn't missed a beat. I change it religiously every 5k. I'm at 25k now. It doesn't burn a drop and it didn't make any "sounds" last winter on even the coldest day.

MY last oil change I used motorcraft 5W20, and probably will next time, cause I have enough oil laying around. I haven't burned any oil so far (only have 7100 miles on my 03 5.4L SD) but it seems to get dirty and stinky quickly. ALso, the engine can be alittle noise on start up when it is cold. I may switch to redline 5W30 in the future. A customer of mine has udes 10W30 in thei V10 for years with no problem. The truck is at 150K miles too.
