On my 70 f250, it has mechanical fan and shroud with the standard radiator. In the Vegas heat at a light, the temp will come up. It has never overheated on me but I sit there and stare at it. On my 72 f250, it has a two speed fan and a home built shroud. It works good as well so far and has the super cooling radiator. I might add some lights because the only thing I dont like about the e-fan is that you dont know for sure if its running or not. The mechanical always goes.

Yeah true about the e fans. Yeah my truck will start to get warm at a stop sign when it's like 80°.

One thing to at least acknowledge, is the rpm at idle. if your idle speed is say 750rpm, thats what your fan is pulling (unless you have bigger/smaller water pump pulley) and if youre overheating at idle, then its not pulling enough air and therefore not spinning fast enough. Electric fans tend to have double that when running. thats what helps move more air. You can also install a temperatur switch to turn them on/off. and utilize a fan iwth two speeds if you need to. Many people have used the two speed 1994 Taurus or Lincoln Mark VIII fans for this application.
Mech fans increase rpms when your driving but by that time the fan isnt needed any more due to ram air.

I've had similar overheating issues. made a custom shroud, mech fan and all that and still didnt work (I also have a cammed engine with a brappity-brap-brap idle. This is what i'm currently working on now. i've bought the pieces, just need to install. Wiring 2 speed fan with volvo relay. | SyTy.net Forums
I bought this fan, direct replacement for the 94 Taurus (known for its powerful fan):
Amazon.com: Dorman 620-101 Engine Cooling Fan Assembly Compatible with Select Ford / Lincoln / Mercury Models : Automotive Amazon.com: Dorman 620-101 Engine Cooling Fan Assembly Compatible with Select Ford / Lincoln / Mercury Models : Automotive
and found the rest of the parts on ebay.

you can also pick'n pull most of these parts for cheaper probably. but i'm a man of little free time to rummage on the weekends.

Yeah so I have mine cammed, and I idled down to about 500rnp to greet the idle sound I want. I know that's not helping the cooling....

In your case we know it is lack of air flow when stopped and the 6 inches between fan and radiator is where the problem is.
I bet once the shroud is installed you will not have any problems.

As 8Line linked above, that is pretty much what my 72 has. 2 speed mark8 fan, Volvo fan controller, and BMW two temp sending unit. I would definitely start with a fan shroud though.
