Boy when it rains it pours. Im working on the 76 f100. it has a 390 mild cam and a C6 rear axle code is 12J. Driver's axle seal is leaking. Changed the seal and still leaking. Upon further inspection, i saw the seal surface on the axle shaft a little boogered up. With that being said i have a 79 parts rig, rear axle code 13J. I called a machine shop and they did not recommend a reddi sleeve or building it back up and turning it down. Ive called every parts house and no luck finding a repair bearing either. Question is could i swap the 79 rear end totally into the 76? 2.75 gear ratio vs. 3.00 gear ratio. Is there anyone out there with a replacement axle shaft? Thanks!!!
The donor axle has tapered bearing and the 76 has sealed bearing the seal presses into the axle tube. Is that interchangeable if I put a sealed bearing on the donor?
I'm not sure about that, all the 9" Fords I've worked on had the sealed wedding ring bearings. it's common practice to convert the 8 3/4 Mopar axle to sealed bearings so it's hard to imagine a 9' can't be.
Welding is a hard no but no reason a redi or speedi sleeve wouldn't work. If they don't have one to fit the application, both brands can be ordered by size. Might have to get creative on the installation but definitely doable. Also, make sure the leak is around the axle and not the od of the seal. Those seals on the tapered bearing axles...bad design IMO,hard to believe that any of them work. Don't over fill your nine. Lube doesn't need to be coming out of the hole. If you can feel it with your little finger, that's enough.
So the axle shaft that is needing repair is a wedding band sealed bearing. The potential donor bearing is tapered bearing. Do you have any information on where i can get a repair sleeve or repair bearing? All of my parts houses do not show any, and the machine shops i contacted said they could not do it. Thanks!
Sorry, got the axles mixed up. Measure the axle where the seal rides with a micrometer or a good caliper and look here. Find the number of the one that fits. Oreillys can usually get them next day or if not,lot of online sources. Don't peel the installing flange off if it's not in the way.
I have put a lot of redi sleeves on 9” axles over the years and have had no issues with them.
If you don’t want to go that route then I would recommend buying brand new axles because you will have a hard time finding 45+year old axles that don’t have a worn sealing surface.
