Question What is this please?

Hi, this is my first post and am curious as to whether anyone can identify what the heck is attached to my rear differential. I think that it is some kind of driveshaft emergency brake system. The issue, I see, is the cable that runs to the front of the cab, terminates to a stud that comes thru the floor near the driver's seat mounting bolt. Nothing, in the cab, is attached to the stud. I've attached a couple pictures of the device.
My thoughts, as it's not attached to anything, that I'm going to remove it from my truck as the regular emergency brake works fine.

Thanks

Device attached to front of rear differential that I'm interested to know what the heck it is and or for. The cable runs to a stud that appears next to the drivers seat front mounting bolt and terminates there.

Can you please take photos of the other side?

Both photos above are from the point of view of the driver's side, yet there is an anchor bracket and pivot arm that wanders off the photo unseen.

Can you take a photo from the passenger's side point of view, and take enough photos to show the origination and end points of each component that you do not recognize?

That is definitely not a Ford OEM apparatus, and while it does appear possible to be some type of driveline "parking brake", it definitely is not a type that Ford uses, not even on Ford vehicles like the E-450 and F-650 that have real driveline parking brakes with drums and shoes.

WAG but is it a driveshaft disconnect? For flat towing the truck? If you were crazy enough to flat tow a crew cab long bed monster like that? I too would like to see the end of the arm that does something on the passenger side.

I will when I can. It's raining hard here.
The rod is connected to the other side of that bracket affair so part of the contraption. I'll get photos of passenger side when possible.

Thanks

Steve

Don't bother. Stay dry.

@crashz nailed it straight out of the gate in a single shot.

Your truck has a REMCO Driveline Disconnect installed.

Since FTE Site Sponsor Torklift International sister company Torklift Central carries REMCO Driveline Disconnects, I'm going to invite @Torklift Sheryl to see this thread, in case you need help in getting any repair parts.

Well OK and a lot of thanks for identifying it. Now as it is non-functional will it be safe to remove the device?

Your driveshaft has been removed and modified with a spline stub, spline yoke, and engagement ring to be activated by the coupler mechanism.

Have you had a chance to read the 28 page Instruction Manual that I posted earlier? Understanding the steps of installation will certainly help in understanding the steps of removal.

Here is more reading to assist in understanding the system:

Talking

Yeah, I scanned the document but as the rear drive shaft half has been replaced, my thinking is removing the actual activator mechanism will not affect the driveshaft operation so not making a safety concern. I've sent a message to Performance Driveline asking the removal question.

Thanks for y'all's help
