Talking My Dell arrived

A day early, in fact. Gotta love UPS. This is one cool computer. Dell Dimension 2400 w/ 17" flat screen monitor.

Since I'm completely new to WinXP, does anyone have any tips to give about it? I like the look of it. Seems pretty user friendly. Anything to watch out for?

Anyone know how to get all my files from the Gateway to the Dell? Network? CDRs? USB cable? I have to do some checking yet 'cause it's new to me.

Its just a matter of wading through the unknown until you get used to it. One helpful thing about XP - if you go into start - programs - accessories and then right click on windows explorer. Choose to pin to start menu. Windows Explorer is where you will go very often to move and find files. Pinning it to the start menu will keep its icon up front every time you click start so that it is easy to get to... Good luck.

I just got my new computer tonight as well and it seems to work quite well. We will see how well I like XP though.

Congrats on your new machine! I've been running XP for a year now with no serious problems. Granted, I have gotten "program not responding" box pop up , but that is a rare event. And recovering from those messages is much more "graceful" than when I got them in Win9x. Overall, a more stable OS than most other flavors of windoze in the past.

However, you'll need to patch and update XP on a regular basis. Sometimes 2-3 times a month depending on what "holes" are discovered. Also, I've given up on IE and moved to Mozilla. It's just too time consuming to try and patch both XP and IE.

As for transferring files, you could do network or just hook up with crossover cable between the two boxes. Or can you burn CD"s on your old machine? If you're moving applications, you may have compatability issues. Just type in "Program Compatibility Wizard" into help and you can get all the details about running older programs on an XP machine. Hope this answers some of your questions, and have fun with your new toy.

With XP if you're not sure if you like the new look of the Start button and what pops up when you hit it you can right click on the Start button, select properties and the select Classis Start Menu.
I find the old look much less irritating than the new one.

I've been using XP for over two years or close to it. Never once crashed on me like Win 98 ALWAYS did. I love it. Oh yeah..I also have a Dell.

Whe I first got XP I hated it. Then it didn't crash twice a day. Now I love it, and want it on my office PCs
