I have a 2013 F350 Lariat CC 4x4 with the 6.8 l V8. 258,000 miles. Truck runs great. I cranked it this morning and the check engine light came on. Scanned code is P0420. It says the catalytic converter needs replacing. Anybody had to do this? How involved is it? Thanks
What that code is telling you is that there is a difference in the threshold between the bank 1 and bank 2, that bank 1 is off, not that the converter is bad, although it could be the bad part, but it could be a bad O2 sensor. If you're going to change anything, try the O2 sensor first. Is that the only code your scan returned? How much oil is your 6.8 burning? You could also try a spacer for the O2 sensors that some may say is illegal, but I don't know about that, because of any excess oil burning out the exhaust. That oil can mess up the converter. Replacing a converter wouldn't be the first thing I would do, because of the cost. I'd make sure that is the problem, and not just blindly follow the code into that expense.
I know of municipalities that do what I just told you, so, if someone wants to play legal eagle, play away.
Thanks. No oil burn or broken exhaust stud. Truck runs great. Recently I was on a trip where non-ethanol was the predominate gasoline and I burned several tanks. Maybe it has something to do with it. CEL is still off.
