I keep hearing about STD, HD, and extra HD cooling in our trucks, but my questionis... whats it all mean. I have a '79 with 351M, thermostatic fan, and 2 row radiator with shroud, and AC. What level of cooling do I have, and what can I do to increase it. I live in NC and the heat and humidity can cook everything, even an engine. THANKS for your help out there.
The heavy duty and extra heavy duty just means 3 to 4 core radiators (instead of the standard 2) with larger surface area (length x width) as well, also slightly deeper fan shrouds (like about 3/4") which put the fan more in the path of the hot air. If your truck isn't overheating, then you don't need to do anything to it. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. That extra heavy duty stuff is for people who tow big trailers through Texas in the summer with the air running and the windows down.
i have an 82 supercab f150 with a 302 and a c6. it has a 3 row in it with 2 seperate tranny coolers, one inside the radiator and one in front of the radiator.
Thanks lloyd33..My truck does overheat in the summer,or gets very hot. I will go up to a 3 or 4 row radiator before the heat gets here.I hope that will help me.Thanks!!
Here's the thing to keep in mind: If your truck's overheating and your 195 thermostat is working properly, then you have more problems because its already fully open. A lower temperature thermostat would open sooner but that would only slightly delay the eventual overheat. At 225 degrees, everything will be the same whether the thermostat has opened at 165 or 195.
