HELP, is this crazy

2020 F 450, King Ranch, NO MODS, 47k miles.

Eating batteries.

Took to a FORD dealer who had it for 3 weeks. FORD said the problem was AGM Batteries! You need to replace with LEAD ACID Batteries.

So you are telling me 1930's technology in a $100k truck.

Who is right and who is wrong?

I am on 3rd battery, all AGMs

That's bologna. Most of us replace lead acids with AGMs because they have several benefits. I just put new AGMs on my '19 yesterday.

Maybe use ForScan to verify that your BCM is set up for AGM batteries and the charge target is 90-100% max.

On your 3rd battery, meaning they keep changing out 1 at a time? Has it been one side, driver or passenger?

AGM batteries ARE lead acid. Many have posted on here that, after switching to AGM, they made no changes to the trucks software and everything worked fine. Something else going on. How are the batteries failing?

My experience is that the 6.7’s will eat both floating lead acid and agm becuase these technologies have low heat tolerance.


my 2019 went thru 2 sets of batteries.


my 3rd set is EFB . EFB’s have the highest heat tolerance. I have 3 vehicles that were switched to EFB’s. Two of them have been running the same EFB batteries for 5 years.

Passenger batteries fail first, they sit right next to the EGR. What does that tell you? When one battery goes it can take the other with it in time. What exactly is killing the batteries? Over charge, under charge, dead cells? If it was your second set, well, quite possible since the truck is 6 years old now, average life span appears to be 3 years from reports of replaced batteries.

I was on set # 3 during year 4.

i suspect heat from stop and go metro traffic.

I got 6 year on my original batteries. I replaced them with regular batteries because the they were cheaper than AGM and the warranty was better.

Between my 18 250 and 21 450 I'm replacing both batteries every 2 years. I run napa gold batteries. I've run standard and lead acid with no change in longevity. I'm beginning to think @acdii may be on to something.

I've been running Walmart Everstart batteries in our vehicles for 20+ years, and get at least 5-6 years out of them.

The video is 5yr old, so YMMV

The OEM battery in my Kubota tractor lasted 11yr, and that is a common theme across tractor forums. I think the brand was Deka.

The "problem" here is there is "probably" a drain on these batteries every day... taking them down too far, and never getting charged back up fully, during a normal days drive... JMO

I just got a set of DEKA sealed batteries in my 18” mason dump and my 19’ 6.7. Both were on their seconds sets of ford batteries and both were leaking horribly

My 23’ was the dealer for an update (plow issue) and they replaced both batteries because they said they didn’t test within spec. They were replaced with AGM ford batteries.
