hello to all the very helpful people on this forum. about a year and a half ago i got my 92' f250 N/A 7.3. since the day i got it i've been replacing things as they fail as well as trying to do as much preventative matainance as possible. so far i've put new: injectors, glow plugs return and sending lines (from the ip), fss, electric lift pump, champion radiator, water pump and t-stat, and general upkeep. currently i have the bed off in preparations for a utility body and i'm looking for what kind of sending units i should be getting. there is a small leak in my rear tank which lead me to buy a new one to replace. id obviously like a new sending unit in my new tank and wouldn't mind changing the one in the front tank while i'm already there. i'm wondering if theres a specific brand or company you guys get them from and maybe help finding specifically which two i need. the replacement tank is the 18 gal rear and i believe the front tank is 19 gal. thank you to everyone who has helped me with all the previous projects and repairs. i also realize i may have been posting in the wrong threads or asking questions on unrelated topics. ill try and keep my posts in their respective threads.
i havent had any noticeable issues with the fsv or anything ever act funny. until recently when i discovered that small tank i would always run the first tank to 1/4 the use the rear tank until 1/2 or 1/4 then fill back up, so if using both tanks helps the longevity of it ill keep my same practice and be good to go. i found a link on another thread the brought me to a website with a bunch of different sending units for all different years. my biggest issue was i couldnt really find anything exactly for a rear 18 gal tank. everything was for a rear 19 gal or just said "rear aft axel tank" https://www.gastankdepot.com/ford-tr...ing-units.html
I know the OE rear tanks on the 80 to 86 trucks were 19 gallon. Can't say for sure on later models but I think it's probably 19 gallon all the way up to 96??
a larger 38 gal rear tank is available if you don't have an under bed spare tire carrier.
All of the tank parts / senders associated with diesel powered trucks from this era are getting difficult to locate and very often pricey. I replaced both tanks years ago with plastic / pvc tanks intended to be installed in gas powered trucks and used sending units that were also intended for gas. Typically these sending units (the gas ones) have a fuel pump built into the sending unit assembly however very often they can be purchased minus the pump which dramatically lowers the price. Buy units minus the in tank pump. During installation of the sending unit into the tank simply add a length of rubber fuel line + I put a barbed brass fitting on the end just to add weight so the line would always lay flat on the bottom of the tank. Plastic tanks will not rust which ends much of the corrosion issues that contaminate diesel fuel.
