My truck did the same thing. 2024 f250 lariat i bought 1.5 month ago. Weird burning smell like you described. Could be the heat strips for the rapid heat. But i think its exhaust related, i know when its burning def(in the cat) that def stinks. My tractor shoes the same thing, but its an scr system instead of dpf, but still theyt burn def the same in the cat and it stinks bad.
Same here, 2023 6.8L
Seems worse after 4wd H use. Was just at the dealer for service, smell investigation was on the ticket but they ran out of time. Truck goes back for 2 days later this month to determine the cause.
Update:
Yesterday drove 50 miles in 4wd Hi at 40-55 mph, no smell this time. Mostly snow covered and minimal slush splash, wonder if that is part of it?
At first I thought it may be the fluid film black I used this year. But I intentionally do not spray the engine area.
The smell was gone for a bit but came back. So weird. I just hope it’s not something rubber laying against a hot surface waiting to then be a huge problem……
I had the same issue the first and only time so far I have engaged 4 HI. I was not in 4 HI long and the smell disappated pretty fast when I went back to 2WD. Truck had less that 3000 miles, now just over that.
I had this on my brand new 6.7 HO. While driving no smell but at idle a burning smell coming in through the vents at stoplights or sitting in a parking lot.
Took the truck to the dealer and they found a intake manifold cap rubbing against the belt
Looks like it left the factory this way
Picture attached - from this thread, maybe it's not just my truck?
Went to the dealer to schedule maintenance and brought this up.
Immediately he said “You not alone. It’s road grime getting on the catalytic converters and burning”
Kinda feel like that’s a cop out, but maybe things underneath are aligned in such a way this happens and fumes get in. Would make sense because it’s worse at a standstill than moving.
Once the weather turns I can dig deeper. To cold, snowy, wet, etc…
I've notice this on my 2022 6.7; burning rubber smell......it smells like rubber for sure and as an old drag racer, I know what burning rubber smells like! Noticeable when you stop and get out of the truck. It seems to be doing this only after my emissions recall for a missing DEF sensor....If I had to guess, I'd say a cat or something else on the exhaust is getting hot enough to melt a rubber grommet or something but I can't find anything. No undercoating on my truck.
I crawled under and noticed oil on the underside of the truck, appears to be from the steering box. It's booked in, but there's definitely a leak causing the smell on mine.
Crud in the cats usually smells like burning leaves or smudge.
